Indoor Garden Ideas - How to Make your Own Indoor Garden

14 May 2022 Written by Staff Writer

Summer in Dubai is not the best time to be outdoors for long stretches of time. Whether you enjoy hosting a backyard BBQ at your villa or like to get out of the apartment from time to time to take a stroll in a nearby park, it might be best to put that on hold for the next three months as you search for indoor alternatives. But if you can’t go out into nature, then why not bring nature to you? Indoor gardens add a lovely green touch to any home, make for a lovely design accent, and let you enjoy the peace and tranquility of the outdoors while sitting in your living room. Here are a few indoor garden design ideas for you to consider this summer.

Indoor Garden Ideas for Small Spaces

1. Potted Plants 2. Green Walls 3. Herb Gardens
4. Bonsai 5. Air Plants

1. Potted Plants

Potted Plants

The most simple decor tip is to get some potted plants and keep those around your home. Finding the right pots for your plants gives you the opportunity to be creative. There are a variety of choices when it comes to materials - you could opt for the simple and rustic terracotta pot, a minimalist plastic pot or a stylish metallic one. You want to place your plants so that they get plenty of sunlight and add visual interest to your living space. Lining up pots of different colours and sizes against each other can also create a fun contrast.

2. Green Walls

If you want to get even more inventive with your plant arrangements, there is the green wall, also known as a living wall or a vertical garden. The easiest way to do this is just to arrange potted plants along the wall on a frame, but you can make it even more elaborate by covering the entire wall in greenery. Just make sure you get a sturdy enough frame, leave enough space between plants so they have room to grow, and that you set up a proper irrigation system. While that does involve a bit more effort, the results are well worth it as you end up with a gorgeous art/statement piece for your home.

3. Herb Gardens

If you don’t want to have plants purely for aesthetic purposes, then why not set up a herb garden? It doesn’t require the space or the level of maintenance that a vegetable garden would, making it an ideal choice for the indoors. The aroma of herbs serves as a natural air freshener and purifier, helping to counteract strong odours (such as fish). And the best part is that you will always have some fresh basil on hand to make a zingy pesto, or some mint to brighten up a homemade glass of lemonade.

4. Bonsai

If you really want to make a hobby out of having a garden, then bonsai is a great option. This traditional art form is the practice of cultivating miniature trees that are pruned and shaped to maintain a certain look, and is also the term for the trees themselves. A bonsai plant requires quite a bit of patience and dexterity to manage properly with special tools (such as miniature shears and rakes), ensuring that you are giving it the right amount of care to let it flourish. It is a very rewarding hobby, though, and a great way to cool down after a long day.

5. Air Plants

On the other hand, perhaps maintaining a garden is too much work. You would really love to add some more greenery to your home, but you don’t have enough time to take care of it. In that case, you might want to go with air plants. As strange and alien as they might sound, air plants are a variety of tropical plants that don’t need much watering or any soil - they get all of their nutrients directly from the air and easily attach themselves to any surface, such as inside a jar or on a rock or piece of wood. They also come in a variety of colours and patterns, making for an unusual and quirky art piece.
