Some places just put you at ease the moment you step inside. This three bedroom apartment at 50 East 72nd Street in Manhattan definitely does that. I walked in on a bright morning and honestly thought about how comfortable it would be to toss your keys on the table and just breathe for a second before even noticing all the details.
The foyer welcomes you right away with space to actually take off your coat and shoes without bumping into things. You get double closets straight by the door and that actually means space for all your winter layers, maybe even the shoes you mean to donate but never do. As you keep walking you get pulled into the great room and it just opens up in a way that feels generous but never showy. Those herringbone floors are the real deal. I ended up just standing for a bit, running my fingers along the Carrara marble fireplace. They brought it over from Europe and the wood burning setup is something you rarely see anymore, especially this well done. On a cold New York evening I can picture the room lit up by the fire with the skyline visible through the windows. It feels alive but never loud.
The dining room is next door and you will notice right away that it is actually built for people who love to gather. Big enough for a dozen friends or just family spread out for a special dinner. The flow from the living area to the dining feels easy and could make the holidays less stressful. Cooking does not have to be a public performance here either. The kitchen is separate and private so if you are like me and do not need everyone watching while you prep you will appreciate that. It has enough space for real cooking not just takeout and the appliances are updated but nothing too flashy.
Now the master bedroom is tucked away from all the buzz. It is bigger than you expect and you get your own en suite bathroom. You will also notice that the light through the windows has a softer quality somehow, probably because of the way the building sits on 72nd. The second bedroom has its own bathroom too and that can be a lifesaver on busy mornings when everyone is getting ready at once. Then there is a third space that you can use as a bedroom or you could make it an office if you have been working from home lately. If you do have help staying with you, or want a space for guests, this room works for that since it comes with its own attached bath as well.
One thing that is hard to put into words is the feel of this part of the Upper East Side. You will step out to see people walking their dogs or heading into the little bakeries nearby. Madison Avenue is right there so if you need a quick coffee or want to look at the shops you do not have to go far. Some of the best museums in the world are a short walk away which is something people forget when they just visit Manhattan. And if you like to be outside Central Park is not far so running or just reading on a weekend is actually simple to do. The skyline views you get from this residence are a small reminder each day that you are living in the city. But honestly once you are up here it is pretty peaceful.
There is something steady about a classic Pre War building. The ceiling lines the stonework the way the light changes in the afternoons. On top of that because this place is a condo not a coop you get more flexibility around ownership which is a real bonus in New York.
You really have to walk through the space to know if the energy feels right. I would be happy to chat or show you around if you are curious. At LuxuryProperty.com we want every step of your next move in Manhattan to feel honest and easy. Just let us know if you want to see it for yourself.
