One Blackfriars, South Bank
Some homes just have a calming effect as soon as you get in. That was exactly how I felt walking into this three bedroom apartment at One Blackfriars, right on the South Bank in London. There is something about the way the light drifts through each room and the views stretch out to the Thames and St Pauls. I paused for a minute by the living room window just to watch the river and honestly the city looks different from here. Things seem a little quieter even though you are in one of Londons most recognisable locations.
One Blackfriars itself really stands out along the Bankside district. People notice it before they even get close. Everyone sees that unique silhouette from the Thames Path or even when you are just heading out for coffee in Bankside. When you get inside the apartment you start picking up on the finer details that set this place apart. It is not just another high rise flat. Tina Bernerd and Partners did the interiors and you can tell immediately they cared about getting the little things right. The wood flooring feels solid and warm under your feet. In the bedrooms you have that thick carpeting that actually makes you want to go barefoot. There are metal fixtures here but nothing flashy. They just work and look good. The joinery is all pretty much flawless and strangely it makes opening a cupboard or a drawer feel a bit special.
This apartment has a connection to Barbara Hepworths work and if you know anything about her, you start to see it. Almost every space manages to feel sculpted but never overdone. There is a real focus on quality, nothing over the top but everything is built right. The kitchen is one of those spaces you can actually imagine cooking a proper meal in. There are professional grade appliances and more counter space than you would expect in a city apartment. I opened a few cupboards and even the way they shut is quiet and smooth. It all feels made for daily life, not just for show. Most people would end up using the kitchen a lot, with Borough Market never far and so many easy options for fresh food. This is a space that feels like it wants to be lived in.
The smart home technology is a real bonus. Sometimes I find these systems a bit fussy, but in this case it is very simple. Lighting, temperature, even some ambient stuff, you get it all with a few taps. There is plenty of storage for coats and shoes, even tucked away spots for the everyday things you never know where to put. Honestly you hardly ever notice the technology unless you want to which is a rare thing in new apartments in London.
Being up high on one of the upper floors, it is honestly breathtaking, day or night. The city is busy but the apartment feels private and still. Most days you can see across the Thames and on clear evenings, the glow from St Pauls is something you will keep coming back to. I even found myself putting my phone away for a while, just soaking up the view. There is a softness to the city from up here and sometimes you see boats drifting by or watch the evening lights coming on in clusters around the South Bank.
Life at One Blackfriars is probably what stands out most for people thinking about the South Bank. You have the concierge team managed by Harrods Estate and they always have time for a hello or to help with a parcel. There are extras you do not always find like the executive lounge on the thirty second floor. You might end up reserving it for a birthday or just to read a book for an hour with the city below you. There is a proper indoor swimming pool if you ever get into swimming laps, a really well equipped fitness suite, and a golf simulator that never seems to get boring. I heard someone say they watched a classic film in the private screening room and ended up staying till midnight. The spa is more than just a place to relax. Some people use it every day and say it changes their mornings.
Around the area, everything is close. You can easily walk to Tate Modern, the Globe, or take a quick drive over to Mayfair or Knightsbridge for shopping or dinner. The Thames Path is right there and I have seen quite a few residents taking a jog in the mornings while the city is waking up. Coffee shops open early here. Sometimes you hear music drifting from a nearby park and if you want you can end up spending a whole Saturday just wandering the South Bank and never get bored.
Every time I visit this three bedroom apartment at One Blackfriars, I get the feeling that some places just work for real life and not just for show. The best way to know if you will feel the same is to have a look yourself. If you are curious, want to ask questions or simply spend a moment by those windows, reach out to me any time.
