Upper Grosvenor Street, Mayfair, London
Some homes just have a feeling you cannot quite put your finger on. This six bedroom townhouse on Upper Grosvenor Street in Mayfair, London, has exactly that. When I first stepped through the doorway, there was this sense of calm and history. The walls have seen a lot here—probably more stories than you or I could ever imagine. You notice the old wood under your feet as you walk in. Not the creaky kind that worries you, but the gentle sound that reminds you how many people have really lived here.
You cannot walk far without noticing the tall ceilings and those big windows. They let in such a gentle light, almost golden at certain times in the afternoon. Honestly, I caught myself just pausing in the hallway, standing beside the fireplace and taking in the way the space opened up. The fireplace is kind of the heart of the hall and on a cool London afternoon, you can imagine settling there with a book or a strong cup of tea. And the staircase—I always end up running my hand along that rail. There is a texture to the wood that feels like it has been looked after. There is a lift tucked away too, which makes life easier for those times you need it but it does not take away from any of the old charm.
One of my favourite things here is the outdoor space. In London, finding the right terrace or courtyard can be a real challenge. Here, you actually get a few. Off the ground floor, there is a private terrace that catches those really nice early afternoon sunbeams. I stood there and you could barely hear the city at all—sometimes just the wind or an odd bird. Up on the first floor you get another terrace, which just feels right for an early coffee or to grow some herbs and maybe a little rosemary. Downstairs, just off the kitchen at the lower ground, there is a quiet courtyard. You can imagine summer lunches out there, or even just grabbing some air in the mornings before everything gets busy. Each space feels different and you get a sense of privacy that is not easy in the centre of London.
Inside, the house really opens up in the dining room. I remember walking in and thinking wow, you really could host a proper dinner in this space. Almost thirty feet long and wide enough that it never feels crowded, with soft daylight coming right in. Around the back, there is this old wood panelled study. If you read or work from home, you can imagine sitting in there for hours. You can sneak out to another terrace from the study, which is one of those little extras people tend to love later. There is even one of those old dumb waiters, still working, which means you could send up a dish or two if you ever host one of those big family suppers.
The house was restored in the nineties so you do not feel like you are trapped in the past. There is lots of room if you want to make it your own. The lower ground floor is like a blank page for anyone who needs more space or wants a games or media room. The big thing here is the house is not listed, so you have more freedom with any updates or modern touches you have in mind.
Living on Upper Grosvenor Street means you get the best of Mayfair. It is peaceful enough that you hear yourself think but every time you step outside you are reminded you live in one of the best spots in London. Walk to Hyde Park in the mornings, or head out for groceries or coffee—everything is just minutes away. Sometimes I see families heading off with dogs or kids practising on scooters on nearby street corners. And if you can picture yourself popping down Bond Street or Oxford Street, well, those days are easy.
The truth is, places like this are more about feeling than about facts. Some homes look amazing in photos but feel stiff in person. This one, though, just feels easy. The only way to know if it works for you is to step inside and see how you settle into the space. If you just want a chat or feel like getting a sense of the place, reach out any time. At LuxuryProperty.com, we want your next move to feel comfortable right from the first visit.
