Villa Viareggio, Lucca
Some homes really let you slow down as soon as you arrive. This one does it straight away. Here at Villa Viareggio in Tuscany just a short drive from the heart of Viareggio there is this easy feeling that sort of settles in before you even step inside. I found myself looking up at the classic 1940s faรงade with the sun catching on the greenery all around the garden and honestly it just felt like it belonged right here by the sea. The villa is bright without being showy. Nothing feels overdone.
When you walk around outside you might hear maybe a bit of laughter from a neighbor or just the wind in the palm trees. You would never guess how much space there is inside. Over five thousand square feet so you do not bump elbows with anyone even on a busy day. The rooms feel open and a little tucked away at the same time so when you want privacy it is easy to find your own corner. I wandered through the main living room and actually stopped for a minute just watching the sun move across these old floorboards. Sometimes if you open the windows you can catch that faint sound of the waves which makes you forget your phone for a bit. The kitchen actually feels like a real kitchen not just a showpiece. The stove and prep space invite some proper cooking and that dining area next to it is really where you want your slow mornings with fresh pastries or family dinners that last a little longer. Even if you are not much of a cook it starts to look tempting.
Heading upstairs on the wide staircase you get to the first floor where the master suite is honestly bigger than first apartments I have seen. There is that good private feel with an en suite of course and the wardrobe is actually hidden so you do not trip over anyone's suitcases. Just next door there is another big bedroom also with its own bathroom so if you have friends or older kids choosing a favorite will not be straightforward. The other two bedrooms do not lose any charm though. They are just as bright and each one has a bit of that sea view. Waking up looking out toward the Mediterranean is something you just do not get used to. One thing I noticed and liked a lot is every bedroom has its own door to the terrace so mornings do not start with bottlenecks at the patio. You just step out whenever you want to breathe that sea air in.
Go further up and there is the attic which is nothing like you would expect. It has light coming in everywhere and there is a lounge lucky enough to have its own bar. Picture sitting up here on one of those cozy gray days when you just want to read, or maybe bring up a glass of wine. There is an extra bedroom tucked away too which kind of turns into a secret spot for guests or that teenager who craves having their own retreat.
And I have to mention that the basement actually works hard for you. It takes care of all the storage so the rest of your villa stays open and calm. I have seen people stash everything down here from bikes to all the folding chairs for those summer dinners in the garden. It is one of those background helps you just start to appreciate more and more the longer you stay.
Now people always ask about guests or staff maybe wanting a bit of space. This villa actually comes with an independent guesthouse right across the private garden. You can keep everyone close enough for the visit but still give them room to breathe. Two more bedrooms a kitchen and living area open straight onto the grass. You could even let older kids or grandparents have their own spot when everyone comes for the holidays.
In the evenings you might see families biking by or the local baker setting out early for the next morning. It does not really feel like being in a city at all. The coffee shop is practically around the corner and the little park by the sea is perfect for a stroll after lunch. Every room just seems to hold this gentle sea breeze and the restoration in 2011 keeps everything comfortable but the original soul is still there. I can picture quiet afternoons with a book out on the terrace or long dinners in the garden as evening falls.
Honestly there is a real sense of belonging here. The only way to know if it feels right for you is to come and see Villa Viareggio in person.
