Castello Reale, Florence
Some homes have that something you just feel in your chest right away. This is one of those places. Castello Reale stands up above the countryside in the heart of Chianti and honestly the word estate fits but castle probably fits even better. I walked up the long gravel lane and heard nothing except a little wind through olive trees and maybe some birds up in the branches. It is quiet here in a way that feels rare now.
The first thing that catches you is the old stone and brick. It is not fake at all. You really can touch history here, with walls that have stood since the seventeenth century. Imagine those families living in Florence long before anyone thought about online listings or property searches. Sometimes you spot a rusty bit of ironwork near a door or sunbeams sneaking under the main entrance. I half expected some old door to creak but honestly Castello Reale just feels strong. It does not have that falling apart feeling you sometimes get with old places. Floors are solid and the air is soft with this unique stone smell you only find around Tuscany.
There is so much space around you. Picture two hectares full of winding garden paths, hedges curving this way and that, and green open squares that lead you into shady corners where you can just sit and be still. I wandered a bit and seemed to forget about my phone. The pool sits out near the edge of the gardens and there is a pool house with its own kitchen. That changes everything. You can make a coffee, cook a real lunch, then just stroll barefoot into the sun. Around the tennis court you sometimes hear laughter and now and then someone playing music from the main house. Evenings can be something special out here with the sun melting into the hills of Chianti.
Inside, the place just feels lived in but not cluttered. There are tall wooden doors that open into this huge warm living space. Big fireplace right in the middle. You find yourself wanting to sink into one of the seats or stand by the window and try spotting vineyards in the distance. The billiard room is tucked in nicely. I could imagine a slow evening with people taking their time and just enjoying being there. There is a study too if you have work to finish or need a bit of quiet. Honestly, the terrace on the ground floor is where I wanted to have dinner every night just looking at the lavender and feeling the breeze. The dining room has French doors that almost pull the garden in with you. It makes every meal feel easy and light.
The kitchen is a real kitchen. You get proper space for making pasta or baking bread which just smells amazing in the mornings. Light fills the breakfast space and it is the kind of place where conversations just start. You get seven bedrooms upstairs and every single one has its own en suite bathroom. That means nobody has to share. Each bedroom feels its own way so it is not cookie cutter at all. The stone staircase going up gives you that old villa vibe and if you head to the top you find two more bedrooms with a private lounge. I barely wanted to leave that little corner after sitting down.
You are not far from Florence and city life is there when you want it but staying at Castello Reale feels like you get a whole other rhythm. Some afternoons there are friends just stopping by to walk in the olive grove or share a bottle of Chianti at sunset. You might open a window and pick up bits of quiet conversation in the vineyard or just stand there watching the light move on the old stone at dusk.
Owning something like a historic estate in Chianti is not for everyone. It is for someone who just wants something with real substance and enough magic that every walk on the grounds feels like a new discovery. There is space for a big family or lots of weekend visitors and everyone seems to find their own favorite little patch. The panoramic view is something I do not ever see myself getting bored with.
You will not know if it is the right place unless you walk through and feel it for yourself. If you want to see Castello Reale or just chat about life in Florence and Tuscany I am here.
