Roar & Explore: Safari Parks

Written by Matthew Harrison

Walk in just after nine when the light is soft and the air is kind. Let your eyes settle. A rustle in the trees, a sudden flicker of wings, and that small hush that says the park is waking up with you. This isn’t a race to tick off animals. It’s a calm wander where the best moments find you if you give them space.

Start with the Safari Journey. From a raised seat you glide past open grass and quiet water, watching giraffes lean into the morning, zebras stitch black and white across the view, and antelopes decide you’re not worth the fuss. Then the hush that arrives when lions shift in the shade and tigers test the air. Guides read the mood, spacing vehicles so you witness natural behaviour rather than a crowd. When you loop back, go on foot to whatever tugged at you, your eyes are tuned now and small details pop.

Each village sets its own tempo. African Village moves with broad gestures: elephants like slow rivers, meerkats popping up like bright questions, waterbirds flashing and settling on the ponds. Asian Village is cooler and deliberate: a Komodo dragon holding still like carved stone, an Indian elephant choosing its path with thought. Save the Arabian habitats for late afternoon when the light turns generous. The Arabian oryx stands with quiet pride; the Arabian wolf keeps its distance and its dignity. For little explorers, the Kids Farm is a gentle first step, friendly goats, sheep, donkeys, ducks, perfect for building confidence.

Pick two anchors for the day and let everything else flow around them. A good plan is one feeding and one keeper talk. If giraffe feeding is on, take it. Flash off, hand steady, and watch that incredible tongue curl around a leaf. Keeper talks are short, lively, and full of the good stuff, why paths curve, how diets are balanced, what the team is doing for species that need our help. If timing lands, slip into a bird show for that whoosh of wings you feel in your chest.

There’s a simple rule for close encounters: let animals choose the distance. Voices low. No tapping on glass. Hands and lenses stay inside vehicles when wildlife is near. For photographs you’ll actually keep, go early or late, work with the light you have, take a brief burst when ears lift or eyes turn, then look with your eyes again. Not every memory belongs on a screen.

Let food and shade set your rhythm. Plan lunch for the warmest hour when many animals rest. Sit where the breeze finds you, sip water, and trade notes. What did you see? What do you want to circle back to before closing. In cooler months you can linger longer outdoors; on hotter days you’ll be grateful for every pavilion and misted walkway.

Before five, give yourself a last quiet stop. Watch a herd choose its resting place or the stillness in a shoulder before an animal settles. Then leave with the same unhurried pace you brought in. A day like this and your decision to explore a safari park won’t feel like an outing. It will feel like the wild chose you back.

Mark your calendar: Dubai Safari Park reopens Tuesday, 14 October 2025. It’s open daily, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. The Safari Journey usually winds down around 4:30 PM, and the last entry is typically 3:30–4:00 PM. During Ramadan, expect a gentle shift to about 10:00 AM–6:00 PM.
