Decoding Dubai’s Taxis

Written by Elysia Suantah

If you’ve spent any time in Dubai, you’ve probably noticed something interesting about the city’s taxis. They all look pretty similar, that sandy beige colour that blends perfectly with the desert skyline, but the roofs? That’s where things get colourful. Red, yellow, green, orange, pink, even purple.

At first, it feels like just a design choice, but it’s actually one of those smart little details that makes Dubai work the way it does. Every colour has a reason. Once you know the story, you’ll never look at the city’s taxis the same way again.

Where It All Began
A long time ago, before Dubai grew into the global city it is today, taxis came in all sorts of colours and brands. There wasn’t much order to it. For someone trying to flag a ride, especially a visitor, it was confusing. You didn’t know if the cab was official or private, or even how much it would cost.

When the Roads and Transport Authority, better known as the RTA, stepped in, they decided to make things simple. They turned every taxi the same beige shade but kept the roofs in different colours so each company could still have its own identity. It was clean, clear, and very Dubai, a mix of order and individuality that somehow feels effortless. So, that’s how the beige taxis with colourful tops came to be. It’s not about style. It’s about smart planning.

Decoding Dubai’s Taxi Colours
Now, here’s where it gets fun. Each roof colour belongs to a particular company under the RTA. And no matter which one you take, the fare and the rules are exactly the same. It’s just the operator that’s different.

Red Roof – Dubai Taxi Corporation
These are the city’s most common taxis, the ones you’ll find almost everywhere. They’re directly managed by the RTA and have been around since the system began.

Yellow Roof – National Taxi
Reliable and easy to spot, especially around busy business districts. They’re part of the same family of RTA-regulated services.

Blue Roof – Cars Taxi
You’ll still see a few of these, though they’re slowly being replaced by purple-roofed taxis under a new operator.

Green Roof – Arabia Taxi
Often found in suburban areas or near family neighbourhoods. Some of these cars are hybrid or electric, a quiet nod to Dubai’s greener vision.

Orange Roof – Metro Taxi
Not as many around these days, but they serve important routes near metro stations and commercial zones.

Pink Roof – Ladies & Families Taxi
This one always turns heads, and for good reason. Driven by women, these taxis are meant for women and families only. You’ll find them near malls, schools, and airports. It’s one of Dubai’s most thoughtful services, giving comfort and safety to passengers who prefer a female driver.

Purple Roof – Kabi Taxi
The newest addition. These are modern, sleek, and part of Dubai’s ongoing upgrade to make its taxi fleet even more advanced.

Now, you might wonder, do these colours change the price? Nope. Every taxi runs on the same meter, with the same fares, all set by the RTA. The colours just make life easier. Imagine you leave your phone or wallet behind after a long day out. You might not remember the number on the door, but you’ll probably remember the roof colour. “It was a green-roof taxi,” you’ll say, and that’s all the RTA needs to trace it. It’s such a small thing, but it works beautifully. It keeps the city organised without anyone even realising it.

How the Fares Work
The taxis here are fair, transparent, and well regulated. The meter starts with a base fare, then charges you per kilometre. If the car waits in traffic, a little time charge is added, and airport pickups have a slightly higher starting rate. Salik tolls? They’re automatically added. No tricks, no guessing. You can catch a taxi on the street, or use the S’hail app or Careem Hala to book one in advance. The price stays the same. The whole system is designed for ease, and it’s one of the reasons why so many visitors say Dubai taxis are some of the best in the world.

The Beauty in the Details
The coloured roofs aren’t just about telling taxis apart. They’re a symbol of how Dubai thinks. The city has a way of turning even the simplest things, like the roof of a car, into something meaningful. It’s structure and creativity living side by side. Every time you see those colours glide through traffic, it’s a small reminder of how the city stays so beautifully organised. It’s a system that puts people first, clear, safe, and efficient.

The Next Time You’re in Dubai
Next time you’re standing under the sun, waiting for a cab, take a second to look up. The colour on that roof has a story. It tells you who’s driving, what kind of service it is, and how Dubai keeps things running so smoothly. It’s one of those tiny details that makes life here just a bit easier, and a bit more interesting. Once you know what the colours mean, you can’t help but smile every time one stops for you. Because now, you’re in on the secret.
