Some places just make you pause without really planning to. I remember walking into this two bedroom apartment at 520 West 28th Street in Manhattan and just stopping for a second. It is funny because New York is never slow but this place almost feels like you can take a breath and look around. You get that feeling that some spaces have where everything feels intentional and a little bit softer than what you find out on the street. The moments of quiet start right as you step through the door and honestly that is sometimes the rarest thing in the city.
The Zaha Hadid Building as most people around here call it is honestly not something you see every day in West Chelsea or anywhere else in New York. Most buildings in Manhattan are all about sharp corners and straight lines but this one just curves up into the light. The design is what grabs you first with the chevron metal outside and these graceful folds all the way up the building. I have seen people walk down the High Line just to stop and stare up at those curves. On sunny days the metal almost glows and if you stand at the windows you kind of feel part of the skyline. Sometimes I think you might even end up waving down to someone walking on the High Line from your own window.
Inside this two bedroom apartment every space is wide open and honestly it just feels easy. No tight corners no sudden walls to block off the light. The living area and kitchen sort of blend right together so you can be cooking or having coffee or just hanging out with friends in the same space without feeling crowded. These huge floor to ceiling windows let in all the daylight and the city energy but somehow the place still feels calm. You stand by the glass and the city feels close but not too close. Real life happening right below you but with a peaceful distance. I have sometimes lost a good bit of time just looking out and watching the light shift across the buildings and the people on the street.
The kitchen here was done in partnership with Boffi and honestly it is easy to imagine actually making a meal here and not just grabbing takeout like so many New Yorkers do. Everything is right where you need it cabinets and counters laid out so you can just get started. There is a sculptural piece that is kind of built into the living room area which you really need to see because there is nothing quite like it in any other Manhattan apartment.
Both bedrooms are set a bit off the main area and each one comes with its own bathroom. As soon as you close the door you notice how quiet it gets. For a city that never really sleeps that matters more than you would think. The finishes all feel modern and simple but the space never feels cold. There are real warm touches that make the bedrooms actually inviting. You will see what I mean if you visit in person. The bathrooms are the kind where you can take a long shower and not feel rushed.
What stands out about living at 520 West 28th Street is how much more you get than just an apartment. The indoor swimming pool is under a skylight and stays inviting even in the winter. Downstairs the lobby is something else with a huge hand sculpted wall and even the reception desk was crafted by Zaha Hadid herself. There is a private IMAX cinema for residents that has to be the comfiest way to watch a film in all of New York. The gym has better equipment than most boutique spots in the city. You have a residents lounge that opens right onto a terrace. There are always little corners to relax.
You never have to hunt for a parking spot because the valet is automated. Storage works the same way. The concierge team is actually on it if you need anything or want something arranged.
West Chelsea is all around you with galleries and coffee shops and those little city scenes happening right outside the building. On weekends I have seen families biking and sometimes if you look out you catch real life New York just carrying on below.
