There is something about the way the light moves through this place in the morning. The first time I came to this seven bedroom house at 165 Deforest Road in the Montauk Moorlands I had to stop and just watch the ocean for a minute. It really is that sort of home. Sometimes you arrive somewhere and feel like everything slows down a bit. Maybe it is the old trees around the property or the sound of the Atlantic right in front of you. With a plot so big you could get a bit lost on purpose and nobody would blame you. The setting is quiet and quite private. People love to call this part of the Hamptons their escape for a reason.
If you know the work of Stanford White and Frederick Law Olmsted you will probably notice their hand in the design. I am not sure if you have ever seen Roman brick set against clean white clapboard and it looks almost timeless. This villa sits on almost twenty acres out here with a built up area of something like seven thousand square feet. That means you almost never feel cramped and the patios run almost all the way around. I stepped out on one side and just seeing the green stretch and then the ocean behind it you almost forget your phone buzzing in your pocket. Sometimes I see families with kids playing out on the lawn or neighbors walking by in the evenings. The space really invites you to get outside.
Inside it still feels very classic. There is a formal living room but it is not stuffy at all. You will notice the way the blue furnishings and silver lights brighten things up. There is a fireplace that actually feels like you would use it on a cold evening rather than something for show. I actually sat by it for a bit during a late visit and it just felt like somewhere you could unwind. There is also a bit of a divider that gives some privacy from the staircase without closing anything off.
A little archway takes you through to another living area and, honestly, the views are even better from here. Those French doors open right up and you smell the ocean without even stepping outside. I watched a few birds out on the patio and thought how easy it would be to spend half the day moving between inside and out. The dining room keeps that same easy mood with a big table. I could see it full for family dinners or even just around a lazy brunch. There is a bit of old school charm with the candle chandelier but nothing feels overly precious.
The kitchen here is bright and ready for people who believe in more than just ordering takeout. I ran a hand across the marble counter for no real reason. White appliances and big windows let in the right kind of light. French doors open straight to the patio so if you are grilling outside it is not a hassle.
Upstairs the master room really does feel like a retreat. The walls are a rich red and the dark wood gives a sense of warmth you do not get everywhere. There is a little balcony and someone put a daybed up there which honestly might be the best spot for taking in the sun as soon as you wake up. Three other bedrooms on this floor plus a den and an informal sitting area if you need a bit of quiet.
The rest of the house carries on with that inviting feeling. With seven bedrooms friends and family always have space. There is a library for rainy afternoons or mornings with coffee. Gardens wrap all the way around so if you like outdoor gatherings or summer barbecues you will never run short on space. I noticed how easy it was to wander along a path to a little gazebo near the pool. Sometimes you just hear the ocean out here and nothing else.
The real showstopper though is your own path right down to the private sandy beach. You do not get many chances like that along this stretch of the coast. The beach here is never crowded which I think is pretty rare for New York.
There is probably a lot more I could say. But really the only thing that matters is how the place makes you feel when you walk through in person. Reach out whenever you want to come see it or if you just have a few questions. Here at LuxuryProperty com that first step is supposed to feel easy.
