Pasyala – 7 Acres – Nugadola Wallauwa House
The Nugadola Wallauwa is a truly unique Sri Lankan home, grandly designed in the late 1930s and now unmatched on the island in condition and style.
‘Wallauwa’ translates as an ancestral manor and the house was built in keeping with that purpose as the family home for the British High Commissioner of Ceylon and his wife (the owner) returning from London. More recently it was the home of a very well known Hollywood actress.
Within 50 minutes of Colombo International Airport and one and a half hour’s drive of the capital itself, the property combines prime position with a uniquely grand yet secluded setting.
An Ironwood-lined drive-in of some 3 kilometres through state plantation lands provides a magical entrance to the property, leaving the principal Wallauwa well removed from other development.
The route in hints at the views from the hilltop, and from the main gates, attached to an old stable block, the drive curves down to the stunning north face of the Wallauwa.
Designed with authentically Sri Lanka architectural themes, the Wallauwa has sharply pitched roofs, ornately styled pillars, and high vaulted ceilings. U- shaped, it enfolds a large mango tree that shadows the main courtyard.
On the ground floor the restored 'ballroom', L-shaped, offers family kitchen, dining area, and two drawing rooms. A separate study/library completes the wing.
Restored teak French doors open to a large terrace on one side and the courtyard on the other. Both terrace and ‘ballroom’ run to a stunning octagonal dining space with remarkable panoramic views of the jungle and paddy fields running far into the distance below, west of the property.
Two large bedrooms sit on the ground floor of the Wallauwa - opening onto a shared wide wooden terrace.
Three large and grand suites line the top floor. All offer abundant space with separate sitting rooms or extensive sitting areas within the bedroom. Two suites boast wide private sun terraces.
The primary kitchen is set on the lowest level of the property alongside utility and storage areas.
The Pavilion, Cottage & The Lookout
The Pavilion offers two bedrooms with large bathrooms, both opening onto a wide terrace and adjoining a shared sitting room.
A separate Cottage lies not far but hidden from the Pavilion – offering a bedroom, sitting room, large bathroom and private landscaped garden.
The Lookout provides a stunning open Shala space, easily converted to beautiful accommodation. Two smaller bedrooms and bathroom sit on the ground floor of this building.
Gardens and grounds
Grounds of some seven acres intersperse mature tropical garden and landscaped lawns and terraces.
The main lawn runs west from the Wallauwa to the swimming pool – views extending over jungle and plantation.
The recently constructed swimming pool runs to 20 metres long and 8 metres wide, with a common depth of 1.2 metres, and is flanked by cabanas and a reception space looking back to the main house.
