Sometimes a home just makes you pause. Maison Du Soleil at 10250 W Sunset Boulevard in Holmby Hills is the kind of place where you walk in and you just want to slow down. I found myself stopping right inside the entry hall, catching sunlight on the marble floors and wondering how it would feel to live here day in and day out. There is a kind of quiet grandness that you feel almost immediately even with its huge size and so many rooms scattered across what feels like a little piece of LA countryside.
Holmby Hills itself has such a peaceful feel compared to the rest of Los Angeles. Over here the trees seem taller the air is softer there is a sense that things move just a bit slower. You get the perks of LA's Platinum Triangle but also this comfort that is hard to put into words. The grounds alone are so much more than you expect three acres that actually feel like three acres. I walked through gardens that smell like summer and caught myself just standing still for a few minutes when the breeze picked up through the trees. It almost feels like every window gives you a different view a little snap of green or flowers that actually change as the sun moves around the house during the day.
This villa was designed back in the 1930s by Paul Williams who has become something of a legend among Californian architects. There is that old school charm in the bones of the place especially in the way some corridors curve or how the staircase sweeps you up so casually. At the same time everything has been renewed you can tell by how the kitchen feels actually modern and like someone might genuinely want to cook in there even though it connects to more formal spaces that just beg for a long dinner with friends or family.
Inside you have so much space but it never once feels cold. There are 18 bedrooms here but honestly it still feels like a home one you might want to wake up in for years not just a grand estate to tour. I peeked inside one or two of the bathrooms. Some are so light filled and honestly you will want to soak in the tub and just watch the leaves outside spin in the wind. One of the real surprises for me was the movie theatre. Most home cinemas are just small dark rooms but this one is huge and every seat is the best seat. I could imagine gathering people for a genuine movie night and really forgetting you were actually at home.
The living spaces blur between inside and outside. There are big doors that fold open and suddenly you are in the garden or on a terrace with city views and you can just see it being perfect for a quiet morning coffee or even a wild family barbecue. Sometimes I imagine someone working from home here and sneaking out to walk among the five gardens when they need a breather. You notice how private it feels even if the city is never far. Traffic and noise just seem to fade away. You almost forget you are so close to everything. Shops are a quick drive. Coffee shops just seem to be everywhere when you want one. Neighbours wave and kids still bike around in the evenings.
The thing is with a place like this all the numbers barely scratch the surface. Yes it is over thirty thousand square feet with those eighteen bedrooms and twenty two bathrooms and plot space that just keeps going but it is what those spaces actually feel like that matters most. For entertaining or finding quiet corners for yourself or just living daily life with more calm and a little bit of luxury all around.
