Some homes just give you this almost movie like feeling right at the elevator. This Art Deco penthouse at 1 W Century Dr in Los Angeles does exactly that. Doors open straight into your own home and there is something about stepping out into all that space after you have come up in total quiet. You get a moment where you want to just stand still and take a breath. It is the kind of place that does that to you. The city looks a little smaller from up here but never less alive.
I spent some extra time wandering around these seven rooms because it was hard not to notice all the little bits of detail everywhere. Everywhere you turn you find something a bit rare. I ran my hand across materials I have not seen used much before. Someone spent years making each element just so here. The penthouse feels like it belongs to the old world but also feels young at heart. It is the kind of home where you might half expect music from the 1930s drifting through but at the same time you can see yourself just kicking off your shoes and streaming your playlist in the evening while the city lights up outside the windows.
The terraces outside wrap you in peace even though you are right above Los Angeles. There is close to 600 square feet of space to just step outside and remember you are living high above one of the world's busiest cities. You can lazy around with coffee and watch the sun come up or host friends at night when the air is full of energy. The skyline is your backdrop. Sometimes you just want to close your eyes and just listen to how quiet it can get when you are up this high. You get a sense of being right in the city but also well above it all.
The living spaces have this way of drawing you in and you will probably find yourself leaning on the kitchen island or pausing by the windows more than you expected. The kitchen really does feel like somewhere you might want to cook something proper for your friends and not just show off shiny counters. Light pours in most times of day and you always have some little corner for a quiet breakfast or a late dinner. The architect really thought about how rooms can just flow into each other and nothing feels boxed in.
What I like most is how the penthouse does luxury in a way that is not cold or too clean. There is elegance and you get a sense of proper Los Angeles living here but you also feel you can flop on the sofa and not worry about a thing. California warmth sneaks in even through all the art deco shapes and classic touches. It just feels comfortable. You get space and height and the kind of privacy you cannot find in many other homes. You forget about the world a little.
Security and privacy are serious here and you barely notice neighbours. The lobby downstairs is all quiet and understated. Sometimes you see families heading out for the weekend or someone sipping a takeaway coffee on the steps while cars pass. Everything in Los Angeles feels close when you are up here though. Restaurants are a short drive. The best shops are easy. And the ocean is just far enough that you catch that salty air on certain evenings.
Honestly though I think you only really get it after walking through. There are details photos cannot really show and a mood that slow builds as you take it all in.
