Through the Keyhole: A Look at Some of Dubai's Best Interior Designers
Interior Design is known as “the art and science of enhancing the interior of a space in order to create a polished and aesthetically pleasing environment” and was made a profession in the 1900’s by Elsie de Wolfe, the first woman to receive payment for decorating a home. She went on to furnish and finish many high-profile homes, revolutionizing aesthetics away from the dark palettes and heavy fabrics of Victorian design, marking the rise of mid-class society and the architecture of the Industrial Revolution with lightness and brightness.
Of course, interior design goes back much further than this - to Ancient Egypt in fact, where simple textiles, spiritual murals and urns routinely decorated homes. This was advanced by the Romans (fusing beauty and comfort) and the Greeks (with a focus on elaborate furniture) and homes began to reflect the social and political status of their occupants. The arrival of the Dark Ages heralded sombre, muted palettes and sparsh furnishings across all class sectors which gave way to 12th Century Gothic styling and the substantive decorative touches of the 15th and 16th Century French Renaissance which had a renewed focus on art and creativity.
Nowadays, interior design has somewhat mixed meanings - some people believe it’s nothing more than “cushions and curtains” but this does no justice to the painstaking holistic process that a good designer undertakes with a full spectrum of services tailored to each individual client. In this blog, we’ll take a look at some of Dubai’s best - from large scale firms with a global presence, to boutique companies powered by women.

They have a diverse team, whose “mission is to enrich the human experience” and their work definitely reflects this. One of the jewels of their portfolio is their work in Dubai Hills, on the Club Villas - 122 three and four bed villas with outstanding golf course views. EMA’s website is bright and fresh and instantly demonstrates their capabilities in taking on any project. You can contact them on 04 878 3531.

With an impressive portfolio that includes projects in District One, Palm Jumeirah, Bluewaters and Volante (amongst many others), Zen has been consulting on residential projects since 2003, and has now worked on over 900 different homes. Their mission is simple, to create “livable spaces that are functional, visually appealing and purposeful”. They cover every aspect of the interior process, from cost-effective turnkey fit out, to complete redesign and renovation. Managing Director Patrick van IJzendoorn has been at the helm since its inception, and continues to lead the creative team from the front - taking the lead on various villa and penthouse projects and collecting awards along the way. You can contact them on 04 340 5050.

One of the more boutique names on our list, Pedeprat Designs was founded by Marine Pedeprat - a French national but well-travelled designer, she has lived in Dubai for 20 years and has an excellent portfolio of both residential and commercial projects. Marine cut her teeth at BG International and then Bishop Design, before stepping out on her own to fully realise her creative potential and ensure a hands-on approach to every project.
