BackInterior Design is known as “the art and science of enhancing the interior of a space in order to create a polished and aesthetically pleasing environment” and was made a profession in the 1900’s by Elsie de Wolfe, the first woman to receive payment for decorating a home. She went on to furnish and finish many high-profile homes, revolutionizing aesthetics away from the dark palettes and heavy fabrics of Victorian design, marking the rise of mid-class society and the architecture of the Industrial Revolution with lightness and brightness.
Of course, interior design goes back much further than this - to Ancient Egypt in fact, where simple textiles, spiritual murals and urns routinely decorated homes. This was advanced by the Romans (fusing beauty and comfort) and the Greeks (with a focus on elaborate furniture) and homes began to reflect the social and political status of their occupants. The arrival of the Dark Ages heralded sombre, muted palettes and sparsh furnishings across all class sectors which gave way to 12th Century Gothic styling and the substantive decorative touches of the 15th and 16th Century French Renaissance which had a renewed focus on art and creativity.
Nowadays, interior design has somewhat mixed meanings - some people believe it’s nothing more than “cushions and curtains” but this does no justice to the painstaking holistic process that a good designer undertakes with a full spectrum of services tailored to each individual client.
