Some homes just have a certain feel the minute you walk in. This four bedroom penthouse at Glendore House on Clarges Street in Mayfair truly does that. I actually paused in the entrance and took in the whole space for a bit. Up here you are right at the top so you nearly forget how close you are to London life below. Three thousand one hundred and seventy six square feet is just a number on a sheet somewhere but really it unrolls in front of you in a way that feels open and private all at once.
One thing that immediately got my attention was the roof terrace. You step out from the dining area and that stretch of Mayfair skyline is just right there. It is not just a sliver of sky. It feels like a full slice of London belongs to you for a while. Sometimes you hear birds swoop past or you just feel the gentle city breeze. Evenings up here could be something special. Think relaxed mornings with a mug of coffee or friends gathering as the light changes. I have seen places where outdoor space feels squeezed in and this does the opposite. It opens you right up. On a slow weekend the city below feels almost gentle from above.
Inside, the main living spaces flow in a way that just feels right. The kitchen – and this is a real one, not just for show – makes you want to settle in with a pot of tea and wait for someone to join you. The island actually draws people in without any effort and the breakfast bar is somewhere you could see people lingering longer than they planned. Even though there is a dining area for proper meals, you get the sense life will happen around the kitchen more often than not. I was picturing those weekday breakfasts where you end up talking too long or the sort of family gathering that nobody wants to leave. Easy for home cooks. Big enough for celebrations.
The apartment is currently fitted as three bedrooms with a study, and honestly changing the study into a fourth bedroom would be easy if you need the space. That flexibility matters if you sometimes work from home or want space to turn into a nursery or even a quiet retreat. The bedrooms have a way of feeling peaceful – lots of light but enough privacy for a comfortable night. The master suite tucked away from most of the bustle comes with its own dressing area and a modern ensuite that fits the mood of the rest of the penthouse. You might actually spend longer than you mean in there after a long day. Plus, something you may not notice right off – it is surprisingly quiet up here. The sound stays out thanks to solid insulation and the fact you are on the upper floor.
There is something about being on Clarges Street. You are tucked away just enough. Step out the door and Berkeley Square is only a few minutes away. The local Abercrombie coffee shop always seems to have someone ducking in for a quick morning espresso and you will spot familiar faces out for their daily walk. Lunchtime means options – countless great little Mayfair places for an easy bite or a midday break. Even when the city buzzes outside, it never feels loud inside. Hyde Park is close if you like starting your mornings with a bit of fresh air. Kids sometimes ride their bikes nearby and you will see the neighbours heading out for a night in one of the private clubs like 5 Hertford Street.
Glendore House itself is the type of building that makes things easy. There is twenty four hour porter service so whether you get home late or leave early someone is always on hand. I have found this makes coming and going feel secure but not at all fussy. Sometimes you just want to set your bag down and feel home right away.
Sometimes you almost forget your phone in a place like this. The light changes. You look out at Mayfair with a second coffee and just linger.
