Honestly the first thing you notice out here is how quiet it is. It is not the dramatic kind of quiet you find in modern city homes where everything is sealed and sanitized. This is the real quiet you get in the Great Karoo. I remember pulling up to the entrance and my phone almost slipped out of my hand because I just got caught up looking at those wild open views. Sometimes you just have to pause for a second and let the place settle around you. This Big Game Reserve sits right in the heart of South Africa bushveld close enough to Port Elizabeth for convenience but trust me you are worlds away from anything busy.
People ask about scale and honestly it is hard to explain until you have seen it. The land stretches as far as you can see and you get those soft rolling hills, tons of wildlife and sky that just seems to eat up your worries. You have got four proper lodges and each one just feels different. Lodge A sits at the top of a mountain. You really feel the wind up here and the whole place has this deep woody smell. Seven of the suites open right onto private terraces. I stood on one of those and watched a whole flock of birds moving across the valley. There are two apartments set aside just for guests, and then there is a luxury suite that honestly feels more like a home. It has a garden and a pool that catches the early morning sun. Two other suites come with their own pools as well so if you are like me and prefer a little peace from time to time, you can claim your own little retreat. It all feels earthy and warm, and the fireplaces make even the cold evenings something special. There is an infinity pool deck too. I stuck my toes in the water and honestly thought about spending the night right there.
Then you move over to Lodge B and it is just classic Cape Dutch charm. Eleven rooms, all with thatched roofs and gentle natural touches. There's a big lawn where you sometimes see birds pecking in the morning dew, and the library feels like the kind of place you could really settle into with a coffee. There is a proper bar and the gentleman's club has a massage room that smells faintly of cedar. Every room comes with its own bath and shower. I noticed the tubs are deep enough for a real soak. You get indoor and outdoor BBQ spaces so afternoons can just drift into lazy evenings. There is also a restaurant and a gym, though honestly it is more tempting to take a walk around outside.
Lodge C sits right in the heart of the reserve. It is a restored farmhouse but it has all the modern bits that actually make a place easy to live in. The whole thing runs off solar, which I find really clever given how strong the sun is out here. Four big bedrooms, a pool that gets warm by midday, and a braai area that always smells fantastic around sunset. The kitchen is actually set up for real cooking, not just putting plates in the microwave. There is a comfy lounge where you can catch up on a film or just doze off.
Then there's Lodge D which is really more about flexible living. Eight apartments, each sleeping two people so it is perfect for friends or family coming in for a holiday or even for longer stays. Some share baths but the bigger ones have en-suites and proper kitchenettes. People gather by the pool or around the fire pit in the evenings, swapping stories or just listening to the wild come alive after dark.
Walk further out and you will find hides built in brick or stone where you can camp out and quietly watch wildlife. There are elevated timber hides too. I sat in one for a bit and counted at least thirteen species in half an hour, not even trying. The reserve is alive with over four hundred bird species and around forty five animal kinds. You just do not get that many places where nature feels so close.
Even better you can do this your way. There are two ways to own all this space. You can take up half or go for the whole reserve. Either way it is a once in a lifetime kind of place for anyone who wants to get into South Africa luxury property or just find a private wildlife escape.
Only way to know if you connect with it is to come see for yourself. If any of this sounds like it could be your pace of life let me know.
