Villa Nor | Marrakech

Some places really are something else and Villa Nor is one of those. When I first wandered down the driveway it just felt peaceful. You can hear the wind moving through all those palms and there is this real quiet that kind of settles in. Villa Nor sits right in the heart of Bab Atlas which is one of those parts of Marrakech that people talk about for good reason. You are surrounded by this stretch of palm grove that seems to go on forever and the view from anywhere in the garden just stretches right out to those snowy Atlas Mountains. Even the horizon looks bigger here. Sometimes when the birds go by it all just feels like you are far away from the world even though you are only a short drive from the city center.

Finding your way here is easy. You are around twenty minutes from Jamaa El Fna and all those busy Marrakech streets and the little winding alleys that everyone wants to get lost in. It is close to all the things you might do in a week. Coffee shops are never too far and those main tourist landmarks are all just down the road when you fancy a change of pace. But you will probably want to spend most of your time right here. The plot is huge really. About a hectare which is close to as much space as you get in this kind of spot especially in Marrakech. Kids could play here all afternoon or you could just wander around the garden when you need some air. Sometimes you spot a gardener pruning the roses or you just catch the sun over the pool in the morning.

The style of Villa Nor surprised me a bit. It is definitely modern and very clean but it never feels cold. There is this blend of really honest Moroccan materials with some smart European touches. You will notice real stone everywhere and steel in just the right amounts which means it feels solid but not too formal. The architects have kept things stripped back so you see more of the garden and those mountain views from inside. The house is actually two separate buildings connected by a corridor so it almost feels like a private retreat. You get a lot of sunlight in every room and the way the spaces are set up just feels easy. You step inside to this entry hall and straight away you are looking out at the swimming pool. The living spaces flow together with big windows so you can keep an eye on what is happening outside.

There are six bedrooms which is more than enough even with a big family or lots of guests staying over. The master is tucked away with its own study and dressing room so you have your own spot when you need it. Each of the other suites gets its own terrace and bathroom which makes it ideal if you have friends coming by or older kids who need some privacy. I like that the kitchen feels like somewhere you would actually enjoy cooking. There is a pantry plus a little courtyard if you want to bring herbs in from outside. Nearby you get a cinema room for nights in or maybe somewhere for the kids to watch movies while the adults chat late into the night.

You will notice the outside gets as much thought as the inside. There is a wide terrace off the main rooms where you can sit for ages with coffee in the morning or dinner in the evening. The pool is long enough you might even do actual laps if that is your thing. Sometimes you almost forget to look at the view until you sit down in the outdoor living area that is open on a couple of sides and just watch the day end. The white roses smell especially good just after it rains. Plus there is a caretakers cottage at the entrance so it all stays easy to manage without feeling crowded.

Honestly Villa Nor feels like something you need to experience to really get. It is big and beautiful but it never tries too hard.
