Sometimes you walk into a place that just feels busy but also easy somehow. When I first visited this hotel in Nairobi's Upper Hill, that was the impression. There is a bit of music in the lobby in the afternoons, and most days you can hear the sound of rolling suitcases because this place really does draw all sorts of people. Honestly, from business travelers with laptops already open to families just happy to be away for a few days, you see it all here. Even before you step inside, there is this winding path through green tropical plants. It sounds like a small thing but it really softens the mood and gives you a light feeling even before you are through the doors. Sometimes staff are chatting and laughing quietly by the café because the café is right there on the left when you walk in so it always smells like coffee. The bar is off to the right and it has this polished wood look but nothing feels formal or intimidating about it.
What surprised me most is how much space you get inside. With over two hundred rooms, this hotel is not small yet it never once felt crowded when I was walking around. There are different room types here so you see people at every stage. Some are executives probably in the city for work and they tend to prefer the suites. Some are families who like to pick the superior rooms because they have bigger beds and a bit more space to spread out. Then there is the presidential suite which is just in a different league. I actually peeked inside and the living area really does look out onto the city. The windows are big and the view is pretty striking especially towards sunset when everything glows. You also see people choosing this place because of location. Upper Hill is really growing quickly and you have the Kenyatta International Convention Centre only a short drive away. The central business district is nearby and you are surrounded by all these new offices and banks. Plus Bunyala Road is just down the street so heading out to the airport or other neighbourhoods feels pretty straightforward.
If you are thinking about events or conferences you are in the right spot because there is a grand ballroom here that can actually fit about three hundred people in banquet style. Eleven different meeting rooms dot the property and I noticed they are actually being used rather than just set up for show. When I walked through, there was a seminar in one and a quiet group lunch in another so it did not feel staged at all. There is a kind of two level gym that always has a few people running even long after breakfast. The spa is not oversized but the relaxation rooms have that low lighting you want after a long flight or a busy day. For food, you get three restaurants and in the evenings you sometimes see guests lingering well after dinner either outside or by the bar. It feels social but not noisy.
What is interesting for an investor is just how stable and flexible occupancy is here. People come in waves all year and many are recurring guests, so there is this natural sense that the hotel keeps filling itself. If you want to check the numbers or chat about rates, all that info is ready for serious buyers.
You get a definite sense that Upper Hill is not only about work but also life these days. There are more places to walk, more local shops popping up, and plenty of new coffee spots. Evenings sometimes bring out joggers or small groups out on the hotel's terrace. None of it feels rushed. Some hotels can feel mechanical but here it feels lived in and present. Whether you are looking for stable income from a hotel investment or just want to see how it all feels in person, the truth is there is only so much you can get from reading.
