Some homes just have a different kind of calm when you walk in. Villa Gaia in Florence is one of those places. I remember stepping through the doorway and feeling a real sense of space all around me. You do not get that too often, especially this close to the city. It is in such a peaceful spot that somehow still keeps the city centre within easy reach. You feel far away from the rush but nothing is ever out of reach. Sometimes you can even hear the church bells from afar, and for a minute, it feels like time slows down here.
This villa was built in the late nineteenth century by a well known Florentine architect. If you look closely around the main entrance, you will notice how elegant the original details still feel. The ceilings are higher than what you find these days. Sunlight comes in through the tall windows, and even on a cloudy day, there is just so much natural light.
The main villa itself is big, but it does not feel cold or over formal. When you open the large front doors you get this almost instant look right through to the back gardens. The entryway is proper grand without being over the top, and you get a gentle welcome from the old floors underfoot. Off to one side is the formal living room, really open and perfect for afternoons when the light hits just right. I stayed by the window for a bit and watched the olive groves. It is nice to see bits of countryside still holding their ground in Florence.
Upstairs you get a dining room you could use for family dinners or proper celebrations. The kitchen is so much more than most people get under one roof. Whether you fancy cooking yourself or just having friends hanging out with a glass of Chianti, it actually feels like a part of the home people use. There is a media room that looks out toward the trees, just right for movie nights when you want somewhere private and quiet. And there is a music room too that really does echo with good sound. You can imagine old Florence parties here, with people playing and laughing late into the evening.
The bedrooms are honestly something special. On the second floor, there are six suites, all of them with their own feel and big windows that take in the rolling green views. Sometimes you even catch a bit of mist drifting over the gardens early in the morning. The furniture feels classic and comfortable, not stiff like in some grand estates. There is a little mezzanine area too, which works for staff quarters if you need extra help around the house or just want extra privacy for guests. Up on the third floor, you find four more bedrooms, plus a few bathrooms that make it easy for everyone to have their own space.
Right across from the main villa there is a second building as well. It is divided into two proper apartments, great for guests who want their own freedom or more staff if you are planning something special. The estate hides an underground wine cellar as well, which is just a little bit magical. Imagine evenings spent tasting local wines, right here in your own cellar.
Head outside and the grounds feel like some kind of quiet hidden park. A private cypress tree drive brings you in, and the landscaping is proper Italian style with shaped hedges, benches under the trees and big open lawns. There are olive groves that stretch out behind the house, a small lake nearby where the local birds gather at sunset, plus a swimming pool that honestly just glows at the end of the day.
Florence city is only a short drive. Shops and coffee spots are never far but you truly feel like you are living in the countryside. Sometimes you see families cycling here in the evenings or just walking slowly home with fresh bread from the bakery.
