1. Mamiya Leaf Credo 80MP Digital Back - $36,000

Headquartered in Tokyo, Mamiya has been producing high-end photographic equipment for more than 70 years. Just over a decade ago, the company merged with Leaf Imaging, a leading producer of digital camera backs, to create Mamiya Leaf. The digital back is what gives a camera its main processing power for digital images and the Mamiya Leaf Credo has become a flagship line for the brand, providing superior image quality and high level of functionality for a variety of cameras. The Credo 80MP Digital Back is the most powerful of the lot, and is accordingly priced.

This is one of the world’s most unique cameras, able to capture a full 360-degree image in one shot (in just 8 seconds), without the need to composite different images together. It can also capture flat panoramas that can be used as backgrounds for virtual reality players. We have been looking at newer camera models and the future of photography in this list but when it comes to the most expensive camera ever sold, we have to take a step back to 1923. Leica, widely considered to be the best camera brand in the world, produced a limited series of 25 cameras that year. Now, over eight decades later, one of those ultra rare cameras was sold to a private collector for a jaw-dropping $2.97 million. It is far from the most advanced Leica model and is one that is extremely quaint by modern photography standards. However, it does highlight the quality and durability of the Leica brand, no matter what the year.
