The Finest Museums in the UAE

The UAE is often characterized as a country of high-rise towers and lavish lifestyles, primarily due to Dubai’s luxury property market. However, there is a deeper cultural layer to the country that visitors don’t always get to see, one that can be discovered in its many museums. There are some truly spectacular options such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, though if you want a more intimate look at the culture of the UAE, then these are some of the finest museums you should visit.

Dubai Museum

Without a doubt the one place that has to be on your list is the Dubai Museum. Located in the historic Al Fahidi area near the banks of the Dubai Creek, this museum shows you a side of the famous emirate that is far removed from glittering attractions such as the Burj Khalifa and Ain Dubai. Discover the simple yet culturally rich origins of the global metropolis that we all know today while exploring a well-traveled quarter of the city.

Etihad Museum

The Etihad Museum represents the unification of the seven emirates that make up the UAE. It is an expansion of Union House, the building where the declaration to unite the emirates was signed back in 1971, and is located on 2nd of December Street, named after the day the UAE was founded. Within the museum, visitors will also find several artifacts related to the political and military history of the country, divided among eight distinct pavilions.

Sharjah Art Museum

While Dubai is the UAE’s commercial hub, Sharjah is better known as the cultural heart of the nation, a fact evident in the emirate’s many museums. One of the most popular is the Sharjah Art Museum, a three-storey structure housing a vast collection of modern and contemporary art by artists from the UAE and several other countries around the Middle East. The museum has several permanent galleries and hosts temporary exhibitions as well, featuring local and international artists. There are also cultural activities and workshops held throughout the year.

Sharjah Natural History Museum

Discover the diversity of Dubai’s animal and plant kingdoms as you explore the Natural History Museum, which showcases everything from dinosaur fossils to taxidermic models of modern animal species. There are also interactive features that show how much of the country’s current landscape was formed. The museum is adjoined by a botanical garden with a variety of local flora, and a children’s farm and petting zoo.

Dubai Frame

One of the city’s newest attractions and one that provides a unique perspective on the city, Dubai Frame is a 150m-tall structure of glass and inlaid gold that is essentially a giant picture frame. A glass bridge running along the top of the frame provides a dramatic view of the older districts of Dubai on one side and the glittering newer city on the other. There are displays and interactive exhibits that showcase the city’s past, highlight key areas and provide a glimpse of how the city might look 50 years from now.

Other Museums to Consider

There really are many more museums around than one might realise. There is a Coin Museum, a Coffee Museum and even a Camel Museum, showcasing the history of how these animals came to be such a key part of Bedouin culture. Each of the other emirates has its own separate museum as well, if you really want to expand your cultural horizons and take a road trip around the country.

The Projects We Are Looking Forward to in 2019

In 2018, we saw the delivery of long-awaited projects such as Dubai Hills Estate, District One and Burj Vista in Downtown Dubai. Going into 2019, Dubai Hills and District One will continue to hand over units, along with several other key developments. These are some of the most exciting projects we are anticipating in 2019.

Located at the gateway to Downtown Dubai, Address Skyview features a unique architectural style that will set it apart in the city’s skyline. It offers one to four-bedroom apartments along with the very exclusive Sky Collection which comprises three to six-bed apartments on the upper floors of the twin towers. Residents of Address Skyview will have a direct view of the Burj Khalifa, will be in walking distance of Dubai’s best attractions, and will benefit from the five-star services of the renowned Address brand. Handover should begin closer to the end of the year.

Address Skyview

A beautiful new neighbourhood being developed in Jumeirah Golf Estates, Hillside features a collection of 20 contemporary villas that bring a stunning new design sensibility to a community known for its Mediterranean-inspired homes. The main feature of each villa is a top floor ‘penthouse suite’, which is essentially a complete home by itself. Hillside is located along the first and tenth holes of the world-class Earth course, where the DP World Tour championship is hosted every November. Units should start handing over early in 2019, giving homeowners plenty of time to settle in before golf season begins anew.

Palm Jumeirah is going to be one of Dubai’s busiest destinations in 2019 as yet another set of residences starts welcoming in new homeowners. The gorgeous development known as XXII Carat is the height of exclusivity on the island, consisting of just 22 villas. Each home has an outer design reflecting the charming houses of Tuscany and an interior that exemplifies the idea of luxury living. Residents can choose from two interior layouts - Classic and Contemporary - with each featuring lavish marble finishes and an exceptional sense of design. We should be seeing handover in Q1 2019.

XXII Carat

Toward the end of 2018, we saw the official opening of Bluewaters Island. Located off the coastline of Jumeirah Beach Residence and accessible by a specially constructed pathway, Bluewaters is a vibrant mix of urban design and island living. The major highlights of the island include the newly opened Caesars Bluewaters resort and the magnificent Ain Dubai, the world’s largest observation wheel and Dubai’s latest architectural icon. Handover should commence quite early in 2019.

Bluewaters Residences

Another of our favourite upcoming projects, One Palm (also known as One by Omniyat) is located along the main trunk of Palm Jumeirah. One Palm has a gorgeous architectural design that will make it truly stand out amongst the other residential offerings on the trunk and residents can choose from one of two interior schemes - one by British firm Elycion and the other by Japanese studio Super Potato. Each design scheme features exceptional finishes and a perfect combination of high-end materials and relaxing colours. The residences are serviced by the renowned Dorchester Hotel. Handover is expected early in 2019.

One Palm

This magnificent project on the West Crescent of the Palm is one that we have been anticipating for some time. Comprising a collection of 104 stunning penthouses serviced by W Dubai The Palm, this is set to be one of the finest addresses on Palm Jumeirah and indeed in Dubai. The Alef Residences are very close to completion and we can expect handover sometime in the first quarter of 2019.

Alef Residences

Every new detail that has come up regarding Dubai Creek Harbour, from Dubai Creek Tower to the mega retail area known as Dubai Square to Dubai’s first Chinatown, has us looking forward to the completion of this ambitious master community. The first steps will be taken in 2019, when Dubai Creek Residences becomes the first residential project in Dubai Creek Harbour to start handing over units.

The World's Finest Tropical New Year's Getaways

How will you be spending New Year’s Eve? You could head off to New York or London to celebrate, braving the cold and wet weather as you count down the last minutes of 2018. Perhaps you would prefer slightly warmer climates, enjoying the magnificent fireworks displays in Dubai. If you want to start off 2019 in truly unique fashion, then perhaps you should consider these tropical getaways where you can celebrate New Year’s Eve surrounded by sand, sea and complete serenity.

The Caribbean

The Dominican Republic, along with its fellow islands in the Caribbean, is a very popular holiday destination for the winter. The weather at this time is fantastic and you get a lovely respite from city life. The north coast is particularly recommended, offering nothing but pure natural beauty with rolling hills, clear blue waters, pristine white sand and not a skyscraper in sight. St Lucia, the Bahamas and Jamaica are other fantastic option, with the latter being especially notable for New Year celebrations that last throughout the month of January.

When you think of a tropical holiday, Hawaii is probably one of the first destinations that comes to mind, conjuring images of vast beaches, clear waters ideal for surfing, and luaus with hula dancers, fire pits and lavish feasts. The Big Island, also known as the main island of Hawaii, is a key destination. It is the largest island in the archipelago and has plenty to explore on every inch of its coastline. Another popular island is Moloka’i, known as the birthplace of hula dancing and one of the region’s most popular surfing spots.

Central & South America

Closely linked to the Caribbean Islands, South America contains some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Panama offers you several options, from tourist hotspots to more remote seaside locales where you can find complete peace. Cartagena and Santa Marta in Colombia are historical marvels, with the latter providing you a window into the country’s rich past with colonial-era buildings that contrast against a lovely modern beachfront comprising promenades, cafes and a yacht marina. Cuba is another country where you can experience the beauty of historical architecture along with seaside bliss, as is Costa Rica. Other key areas to consider are Nicaragua, Ecuador (a great choice for golfers as well) and Belize, which has a diverse array of activities taking place during the entire festive period.

Southeast Asia

Thailand is one of the most exciting New Year’s destinations in the entire world. While Bangkok seems like the obvious place to visit, many of the smaller islands are the true hotspots, hosting New Year’s beach parties that can often last until dawn. The culturally rich Vietnam gives you many options from the heart of the city to ancient temples and rural areas. The most famous tourist destination is Halong Bay, a stunning beachfront locale that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Malaysia is a paradise for golfers with over 17 courses to choose from and a wealth of coastal areas where you can relax by the sea as you prepare to welcome the coming year. If you are itching for a more traditional New Year’s celebration, you can head over to the neighbouring Singapore to enjoy thrilling fireworks displays.

Celebrating New Year's Eve in Dubai

New Year’s Eve is the biggest night of the year and Dubai knows how to celebrate the occasion in style. You can opt for a quiet, intimate dinner with a view of the fireworks on the far horizon or head to a grand New Year’s bash to count down the final seconds of 2018. Among the plethora of options that this city offers, these are perhaps the finest ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Dubai.

Along with the Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah is another iconic New Year’s destination with an awe-inspiring fireworks display over the Atlantis. The Royal Gala is an unrivalled experience in the city, taking place on the beach outside the resort. A grand buffet including some of the most indulgent seafood dishes such as lobster, caviar and sushi will be accompanied by live music and a party lasting until 3 am. Revelers will enjoy the most stunning views of the sea, the city skyline and of course, the exceptional fireworks display.

One of Dubai’s most vibrant new hospitality destinations will be hosting a gala celebration for New Year’s Eve. The marina promenade surrounding the resort will be the setting for live outdoor entertainment and cooking stations serving up high-quality Italian cuisine made with premium seasonal ingredients. Alternatively, you could enjoy a specially curated Japanese menu at Hoseki or a black-tie Italian dinner at Il Ristorante - Niko Romito, all while enjoying the fireworks at JBR and the Palm.

Bulgari Resort

Located in the heart of Dubai and along the banks of the Dubai Canal, Al Habtoor City has become a hub of entertainment thanks to the presence of three world-class hotels. You can enjoy a walk along the Canal promenade, catch a stunning performance at La Perle and then head over to enjoy a sumptuous New Year’s feast. The Hilton Habtoor City will be offering a variety of dining options on the 31st of December while Habtoor Palace will have two specially themed dinners at its signature restaurants. You can have a New York-inspired meal at World Cut Steakhouse or a taste of Versailles at BQ French Kitchen & Bar.

Al Habtoor City

For the past three months, Nikki Beach has been celebrating the four elements - water, earth, fire and air - with special themed events. Air is the last element on the list and the theme for the resort’s New Year extravaganza. Guests are asked to wear white to represent the ethereal element  as they participate in Dubai’s longest New Year party, lasting an impressive 14 hours.

Nikki Beach

A short walk away from the Burj Khalifa, the magnificent Dubai Opera will be hosting its own New Year gala - the Black and White party. Showcasing the cleverness of its design, the main auditorium will be transformed into a party venue where guests can enjoy live music and a perfect view of the fireworks at midnight. If you would like to celebrate over dinner, then head over to signature restaurant Sean Connolly at the Dubai Opera for a 70's themed Roller Disco dinner featuring a host of seafood specialties and some classic favourites.

Dubai Opera

Watching the spectacular fireworks display at the Burj Khalifa has become something of an annual tradition for Dubai’s partygoers. Last year, the world-famous tower tried something new with a stunning laser light show that left viewers dazzled. This year, however, it is a return to the familiar as the fireworks are back with a metaphorical (and undoubtedly literal) bang.

The World's Finest Art Museums

Art museums provide a unique glimpse into a nation’s history and its culture. Even the simplest portrait has a grand story to tell in its brush strokes, the artistic style and the choice of palette. These are some of the finest art museums in the world, housing works from the most renowned classical and modern artists.

The Louvre, Paris

It should perhaps come as no surprise that the Louvre comes first on the list. The largest and most famous museum in the world, this Parisian landmark is known for its extensive collection including works such as the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo along with sculptures by Michelangelo and pieces dating back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Vatican Museums, Vatican City

Located in Vatican City, the Vatican Museums house some of the most important works of the Renaissance period, as well as sculptures from ancient Rome divided across 54 galleries. The highlight of the collection and, fittingly, the last stop on a tour of the museums, is the Sistine Chapel and its famous ceiling fresco painted by Michelangelo.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City

Opened in 1872, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, more popularly known as the Met, is located at the heart of Manhattan and is a key cultural destination. Aside from housing paintings and sculpture from all over the world, including famous works by Picasso and Van Gogh, the Met aims to educate the general public about art. The museum is also famous for the annual Met Gala, a charity function that attracts some of the biggest celebrities from the world of entertainment.

Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago

The second largest museum in the United States after the Met, Chicago’s Art Institute is iconic for the twin bronze lion statues outside its main entrance. The museum has a large collection spanning various artistic eras, which was expanded further with the opening of the Modern Wing in 2009. The museum is also a research institution with its own laboratories, conservation departments, an expansive library of architecture and history, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the world’s foremost art schools.

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Alongside the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum is one of the most famous cultural institutions in Europe. Among its collection are a staggering 1 million exhibits from between the 13th and 21st centuries, a renowned collection of Asian artefacts and works by Rembrandt and Johannes Vermeer, including Rembrandt’s famous painting The Night Watch. It is also home to the largest research library in the Netherlands.

Tate Modern, London

The United Kingdom has no shortage of fantastic museums and cultural buildings to visit, and one could well devote and entire article to all of them. When it  comes to art, perhaps the most popular is Tate Modern, which houses an extensive collection of British art dating back to 1900 and contemporary art from all around the world. Since it first opened in the year 2000, the museum has attracted more visitors than it can accommodate, leading a to a large-scale expansion, the first phase of which was completed 2 years ago.

Dubai's Ultimate Family Homes

With Christmas just around the corner, the air is full of festive cheer and for most people, this is a time to be spent with family. And indeed, there is no better way to spend quality time than in a gorgeous new family home. Dubai has, over the years, become a top destination for those seeking to establish their primary residence and as such, the city has a collection of fantastic homes for the discerning buyer to consider. Below, we have curated some of Dubai’s ultimate family homes, ideally designed to craft holiday memories.

Sienna Lakes, Jumeirah Golf Estates

Jumeirah Golf Estates is the quintessential family community, divided into several beautiful neighbourhoods of charming Mediterranean-style homes. The heart of the community is taken up by two world-class golf course - Fire and Earth -  and this lovely villa in the Sierra Lakes neighbourhood is ideally positioned to overlook the Fire course. The home is set over three levels, featuring an open plan living and dining space along the back that overlooks a backyard pool and a well-designed kitchen with Miele appliances. The basement can be used as a media room or home cinema and the villa also comes with a two-car garage and, as is typical of homes at Jumeirah Golf Estates, a golf buggy port.

Hattan, The Lakes

The Lakes is a well-established community in Dubai and is known for its beautiful Arabesque architecture. This villa is part of the Hattan enclave, and features a unique interior layout. The main living areas are located along the ground level, along with a gorgeous kitchen and dining room that open out to the back terrace to create a larger entertaining and dining space. Four bedrooms, including the master suite, are spread out around the first floor and there is a fifth bedroom located on the roof, surrounded by a large open deck that offers 360-degree views of the community and the Dubai skyline. At present, the room is being used as a home office but can be repurposed into a grand master suite or a rooftop lounge.

The Best Winter Experiences in Dubai

If you really want to make the most of Dubai’s winters, you need to be outdoors. Perhaps an afternoon at the beach is in order, or a lovely dinner under the stars. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, then we would recommend trying one of the experiences below that are just perfect for winter.

Go on a Desert Safari

Far from the glitz and glamour of the shopping malls and well-trodden areas such as Palm Jumeirah, going on a desert safari is the quintessential Dubai experience. One of the best options is with Platinum Heritage, a luxury tour operator offering two fantastic ways to enjoy the desert. The Platinum Collection takes you around the dunes in the latest and most high-end Range Rovers, providing top-notch services and meals in a fantastic desert retreat. Or you could opt for the Heritage Collection, where you can choose from a select range of vintage jeeps to drive around in and spend the evening in authentic Bedouin camp made out of traditional materials and local entertainment.

Go Camping

As a companion to the desert safari, you can also go camp out in the desert, which is especially enjoyable at this time of year. There are several areas around the outskirts of the city that are tailor made for setting up camp and enjoying the beauty of nature. Al Qudra is always a popular option with its beautiful lakeside setting and an abundance of indigenous wildlife that includes foxes, oryxes and over 170 bird species. If you want to head a bit further out, you can go to Jebel Jais, a famous mountain in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah or Hatta, which sits on the border between the UAE and Oman and is a haven for hikers and campers. If you want to experience the outdoors in true Dubai style, there are several glamping options available to ensure your complete comfort as you sit nestled in nature.

Get an Adrenalin Rush

This one is for the thrillseekers. Get your blood pumping with some of the most exciting activities around the city, all of which are best enjoyed when the weather cools. Jump out of a plane with SkyDive Dubai and see the iconic Palm Jumeirah from a breathtaking new perspective. Or you can hop on the XLine at Dubai Marina, the world’s longest urban zipline, and soar over the city skyline. Other options include bungee jumping, dune bashing and racing around the famous Dubai Autodrome.

Visit a Water Park

If you want a nice balance of thrills and relaxation, Dubai’s water parks have exactly what you’re looking for. Wild Wadi is an old favourite, offering fun and relaxing activities for children was well as more pulse-pounding rides such as Tantrum Alley and the Burj Surj. Aquaventure on Palm Jumeirah is another popular one, best known for the famous Leap of Faith water slide. The park also has ziplines, a private beach and lagoons filled with sharks and rays where you can swim in complete safety. And of course, there is the new Laguna Waterpark that opened this summer at La Mer. Divided into five zones, the park offers private cabanas if you want to spend a lazy afternoon, exciting new rides, areas for children and the WaveOz180, one of only three cutting-edge surfing simulators in the world and the only one of its kind in the Middle East.

Watch Some Sports

As the weather cools, Dubai’s sporting season heats up. From the first polo match in October to the DP World Tour Championship in November and Dubai Rugby Sevens in December, there is a full lineup of events leading up to the start of summer. Fitness enthusiasts can participate in the Dubai Marathon in early January and later in the month, golf lovers get to enjoy the Dubai Desert Classic. February brings with it the Dubai Tennis Championships and March is capped off by the most prestigious event of the year - the Dubai World Cup held in the spectacular Meydan Racecourse.

Almost as choice an option are tickets for the Pavilion restaurant, which serves up views over the starting line as well as a drinks reception, four course lunch, traditional afternoon tea and private tote betting.

The Met Gala, USA, May 6

Entry to the Met Gala is by invitation only. A-listers from the world of film, music and design are invited along with the world’s top socialites. The event was set up to raise money for the museum’s Costume Institute, so museum benefactors are also on the guest list. Donations of between $70,000 and $250,000 are rumoured to be about enough to secure a table.

Royal Windsor Horse Show, England, 8th to 12th May

2019 will be a red-letter year for the Royal Windsor Horse Show, as it marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria. A special pageant will be held in memory of the queen featuring a 90-minute show performed by a cast of 500 performers and 400 horses. For the most premium experience you’ll need to purchase a Royal Windsor Horse Show Membership Ticket. Your name will be added to a historical guest list that features names such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davos Jr and Shirley Bassey when you get tickets for the Monaco Red Cross Ball. They’re not just handed out to anybody, though. You have to apply for them by email through the Monaco Red Cross. When you do have one, you’ll be entitled to a red-carpet welcome at the Salle des Etoiles, a lucky draw, a refined dinner, and the concert, ball and fireworks display.

Cowes Week, England, 10th to 17th August

Established in 1826, Cowes Week is one of the largest sailing regattas in the world and arguably the most elite. It now stages 40 daily races and features more than 1,000 boats. A variety of hospitality options are available that allow you to watch the sporting action with finesse. Solent Events is the official partner of the event and they offer both on-water and shoreside options including private RIB charters followed by drinks receptions and lunches ashore.

Vanity Fair Cannes Party, France, 17th May

The Vanity Fair Cannes Party is arguably the highlight of Cannes Film Festival. It’s hosted at Hotel du Cap where the terrace looks out over the smiling shore of the French Riviera. The evening starts off with gourmet food – artichoke risotto and roasted blue lobster is a typical menu – before guests move inside for the after-party with live music and dancing. Invites are rare as Golden Tickets but they’re not impossible to get hold of. When you do, you’re looking at a price tag of around £7,000 per person.

Salon Privé Concours d'Elégance Classic Cars Show, England, 5th to 8th September

Held at the birthplace of British wartime prime minister Winston Churchill, the Salon Privé Concours d'Elégance Classic Cars Show floods the grounds of Blenheim Palace. Classic cars gleam alongside hyper cars and supercars while a luxury lifestyle party takes place in the gardens. Private dining for tables of 12 is available in the Churchill Pavilion. Mightier Than The Sword: The World's Finest Pens

In the age of digital technology, where most writing is done on laptops, tablets and phone screens, the pen still stands tall as a writing instrument without equal. There is something very personal about a handwritten note that no writing app can replicate. Below we have curated a list of the very finest pens in the world, intricately crafted tools that are symbols of true refinement.

Caran d’Ache Gothica - $487,000

Named after the Russian word for pencil (karandash), which in turn is derived from the Turkish kara tash (essentially graphite), Swiss company Caran d’Ache certainly has a firm grip on the history of writing instruments. This knowledge is combined with expert craftsmanship to produce fine tools such as the Caran d’Ache 1010, La Modernista Diamonds, and the stunning Gothica. A love letter to Gothic architecture, the Gothica features patterns of fleur-de-lis and rosettes, with 72 rubies and 72 emeralds used in the design. It also has almost 900 diamonds encrusted in the cap and the barrel, giving it that extra shot of luxury.

Montblanc Mystery Masterpiece - $730,000

Montblanc is a brand that needs no introduction. Its cigar-shaped pens and snow-capped mountain logo are instantly recognizable the world over. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Montblanc partnered with another famous luxury brand, Van Cleef & Arpels. The collaboration, which involved nearly two years of painstaking work by jewellers, designers and craftsmen, resulted in the aptly named Mystery Masterpiece. Unveiled in 2007, it was the most expensive pen in the world and limited to just 9 pieces. The body of the pen is made of white gold, with an 18k gold nib, more than 800 diamonds and three variations involving rubies, sapphires and emeralds.

Caran d’Ache 1010 Diamond Edition - $1,000,000

The renowned Swiss brand makes the list again with a piece that combines two quintessential symbols of luxury - pens and watches. The name of this particular pen derives from the time of 10 minutes past 10, which is considered to be the most aesthetically pleasing position of clock hands on the dial. The body of the pen is covered in finely crafted gears and wrapped in a transparent casing to mimic a ‘skeleton’ watch design. Sticking with the horological theme, the pen clip is designed to resemble a clock hand and even the nib has a gear design engraved into it. There are three editions of the 1010 collection - silver, gold and diamond. The Diamond Edition is the only one worth seven figures and features over 800 perfectly cut stones.

Aurora Diamante - $1,470,000

The simplest way to make any item more exclusive is to add diamonds into the design, as has been the case on this list so far. The Aurora Diamante continues that same trend, as evidenced by the name alone and is as much an item of jewellery as a writing instrument. It is encrusted with over 2,000 diamonds, of which 1,919 are on the barrel as a nod to the year that Aurora was founded. All of the stones have been sourced from the renowned DeBeers Jewellers and the nib has an element of customization as it can be engraved with a family coat of arms or the owner’s initials. This is the only unit produced in this edition, making it a very exclusive collector’s item.

Montblanc Boheme Royal - $1,500,000

As with Caran d’Ache, it should be no surprise to see Montblanc on this list twice. Part of the Boheme collection, the Boheme Royal is made of 18 karat white gold and studded with over 1,400 diamonds of the very highest grade. The stones have a slight colouration that adds a unique quality to the pen’s aesthetic but isn’t obvious unless you compare them side by side with a colourless diamond. Even the Montblanc logo has been done up in style, made using 18 karat white gold and 19 diamonds. This is also one of the only fountain pens in the world with a retractable nib.

Tibaldi Fulgor Nocturnus - $8,000,000

Crafted by famous Italian pen maker Tibaldi, the Fulgur Nocturnus is truly one of a kind. As with every other entry on this list, there are diamonds involved - 945 black diamonds, in this case. Covering the cap and most of the barrel, these gorgeous dark gems are the inspiration for the pen’s name, which translates to ‘Night Glow’. The most fascinating part of the pen is its design, based on the Golden Ratio, also known as the Divine Proportion of Phi. When two components of an object have a ratio of approximately 1.618, it is known as the Golden Ratio and is considered to be the most visually pleasing proportion. This mathematical principle is used throughout architecture, art and is even found in nature. If you measure the length of the pen’s cap and the length of its barrel (the portion that’s visible when the pen is capped), you will find the ratio between the two to be exactly 1.618 - the Golden Ratio.

Interior Design Trends to Watch Out for in 2019

Well-planned design can often mark the difference between a house and a home. With the right look, you build a space that is uniquely yours and makes a strong impression on your guests as well. Surface Design Middle East, one of the largest interior design exhibitions in the region, is always on top of the latest design trends in the market and has been looking at some of the ideas that have been gaining traction of late. These are some of the most popular interior design trends you can expect to see more of in 2019.

Cultural Identity

In this case, we are not simply talking about bespoke design elements or specially handcrafted pieces, but designs that have a strong cultural connection. While European-inspired interiors and contemporary aesthetics are and will no doubt continue to be popular, more and more homeowners are looking to make their home a reflection of their heritage. The clean-cut minimalism of modern design is infused with rustic traditional flourishes to create something wholly unique and indicative of an individual personality and lifestyle.

Natural Materials

This is hardly a new trend and can be seen across a variety of properties, from upcoming beachfront projects to villas in established family communities. Wood, stone and marble can add a beautiful finish to any home and are increasingly being used in a manner that brings an understated level of elegance. A similar emerging trend is the use of larger tiles and seamless joinery, essentially masking the artificial nature of home interiors while creating a cleaner look.

Colours That Make a Statement

The benefit of buying a brand new unfurnished home or a ‘shell and core’ unit is that you get to outfit the interior space as you please. And nothing makes a design more distinctive than a strong use of colour. While the use of black and grey tones to create a high contrast is always a bold choice, bright and saturated colours are more on trend. Pair bright and sunny oranges with cool shades of blue or add a dash of lime green in your accents. Consider playing with both colour and texture until you end up with a combination that is truly unique.

This is another trend that has been noticeable in upcoming developments, exemplifying the old adage ‘less is more’. Sweeping shapes and a limited palette can be used effectively to create a striking and uncomplicated look. When combined with bold colours and natural finishes, you can craft a home that is artful in its presentation without appearing too extravagant or cluttered.

Personal Space

Ultimately, what any homeowner wants is to put their own stamp on a home, to let their personality and tastes shine through the look and feel of the interior space. At the same time, comfort is essential. While design was once dictated primarily by aesthetic appeal, homes nowadays are striking a balance between form and functionality. With a wider range of customized design options to choose from, it is crucial to find what best suits you. You want to avoid finding yourself in a situation where extensive renovations and upgrades will be required in a year or two to fix a design that was never quite right to begin with.

Masters of their Craft: The World's Finest Artists

On 15th November 2018 the record was set for the most expensive artwork by a living artist sold at auction. David Hockney’s Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) was snapped up for $90.3 million at an auction in New York. The sale price was 5,000 times what the artist originally sold it for in 1972.

There’s no denying that artwork is an investment. However, art is arguably the most singular sort of status symbol, too. Whereas you can customise a car, plane or piece of jewellery to a certain degree, paintings are unique as a fingerprint.

With this in mind, here is a list of the world’s most sought after artists with a guide to where you can buy their works today.

David Hockney

Born in Bradford in northern England in 1937, David Hockney spans the genres of print, photography and paint with his artwork. It is impossible to untangle this artist’s name from the pop art movement of the 1960s and multiple commentators call him the most influential British artist of the 20th century.

Many of Hockney’s pieces portray human relationships. Some are abstract. Others question conventions. All are bright and thought provoking. Pieces of his work are currently on sale around the world including Artist and Model 1974 and Jungle Boy 1964. Prices are, of course, on request.

Jeff Koons

It was Jeff Koons that Hockney stole the record from when Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold in November. Koons’ Dog of Balloons (Orange) was previously the most expensive artwork by a living artist sold at auction.

Many of Koons’ works have a Wonderland quality to them. Think huge reflective balloon animal sculptures and basketballs in fish tanks. Some of his balloon dog sculptures are currently on sale in galleries such as Art Please in New York. Again, price is on request.

Gerhard Richter

In 2015 Richter’s an Abstract painting sold at Sotheby’s for £46.3 million. His collection of works includes abstract art, photorealistic paintings, photographs and glass pieces. Richter is a Marmite jar of an artist. Works such as Grey – a pure grey canvas designed to reflect the epitome of non-statement – have certainly caused controversy amongst critics in the past.

Today, though, the German-born artist is regarded as one of the most influential of the 20th century. Items from his collection are currently on sale at auction houses such as Phillips London with a typical mid-range price tag hovering around $89,000.

Jasper Johns

A collage of paper, encaustic oil, and fabric, Jasper Johns’ Flag netted $36 million at auction in 2014. That sort of price point is par for the course as far as his pieces are concerned. Born in America, Johns’ is said to have defined the artistic period between abstract expressionism and pop art.

Many of Johns’ works have a magic eye quality to them. What you see in many of his pieces, like 0 through 9 and Dancers on a Plane, changes between the first, second, third and fourth glance. Items from Johns’ collection are currently on sale at auction houses like Neumeister Münchener.

Christopher Wool

Christopher Wool has exhibited in locations such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. His most expensive piece, Riot, sold for $29.93 million in 2015.

His artworks hit you right between the eyes. Many of them feature words stencilled on white backgrounds that read ‘Hypocrite’ or ‘Celebrity’. Others feature ink blots or chaotic tangled lines. His pieces are currently on sale with Simon Lee art gallery in New York and prices are on request.

Peter Doig

Tate calls Peter Doig ‘one of the most renowned living figurative painters’. It is comments like this that push the prices of his art up to $28.81 million – this was the price that his painting Rosedale sold for in 2017.

Born in Scotland, Doig produces paintings that are diaristic in form, often capturing snapshots of contemporary existence on canvas. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Tate Gallery in London, and the Goetz Collection in Munich, among others.

Pieces of his work are also currently on sale through the likes of limited edition art dealers MLTPL Hamburg and Galerie Frank Fluegel in Nurnberg.
