7 of the World's Newest Michelin-Starred Eateries

Travellers of old used to work their way around the world by following the constellations. Today, foodies do the same. Only, the stars they seek don’t belong to the sky but to elite eateries. There are almost 3,000 Michelin starred restaurants across the globe, and thousands of others that don’t have stars of their own, but have menus conceived by Michelin chefs. Can’t make up your mind as to which one to sample next? Here are seven of the newest pins in the gourmet map.

Ducasse sur Seine, Paris

The Champagne magnum has just been cracked open on the hull of Ducasse sur Seine, a dinner cruise boat on the river that ribbons its way through the centre of Paris. Both lunchtime and dinner cruises are available on the boat and, as the name gives away, the menus have been conceived by Michelin starred chef Alain Ducasse. A variety of dining experiences are available on the boat. The plushest option is the Paris Est Une Fete – The Best View on the Seine. Costing 500 euros per person, the experience begins with a flute of Champagne and continues with a five-course meal with wine pairings.

Opened in summer 2018, Don Alfonso 1890 has not one but two Michelin starred chefs at its helm – Alfonso Iaccarino and his son Ernesto. The restaurant looks as much like an art gallery as it does an eatery, with sculpture centrepieces and original commission canvases on the walls. There’s no colour, though. Everything is alabaster or silver-hued to allow the dining room to act as a blank canvas for the food. The menu is inspired by Italy, but there’s nothing ‘mamma used to make’ about the food. Dishes like ice creamed eel and slow cooked egg yolk with burrata foam top the plates here.

Core, London

In October 2018 Core made its debut in the Michelin guide with not one but two Michelin stars next to its name. The warmly lit and softly furnished restaurant was opened in Notting Hill in 2017 by Clare Smyth – the chef that catered for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s evening wedding reception. Costing £115 per person or £210 with wine pairings, the tasting menu puts British food on a pedestal. Example dishes include Isle of Mull scallop tartare and a refined take on cherry Bakewell.

Angler, San Francisco

The name of the chef responsible for Angler is lit up brighter than the Hollywood sign. Joshua Skenes basks in the glow of three Michelin stars for his restaurant Saison. With Angler, which opened in September 2018, he’s focusing on sea food. The menus are hyper-local and, like the sea from which the main ingredients are sourced, they never look the same twice. Caviar is always a feature on the menu, as is a raw bar that includes options like ice cold oysters and purple sea urchin. Depending on what the local fishermen bring in each day, you’ll also find choices like king crab and scorpion fish on the menu.

Don Alfonso 1890, Toronto

ABaC, Barcelona

ABaC became Spain’s newest three Michelin starred restaurant in 2018. With chef Jordi Cruz at the reins, it’s a boundary pushing place. Dishes like lime cactus with tequila, and blue oyster with violet potatoes and lyophilized oyster are served on and in everything from plump pillows and cardboard boxes marked ‘fragile’ to Fabergé-style eggs. The Gran menu option costs 210 euros per person or 315 euros with wine pairings. The restaurant also has rooms onsite. The penthouse suite is fronted by an open-air terrace with a sunken Jacuzzi.

Arcane, Hong Kong

Michelin handed Arcane its first star in 2018. The chef behind the eatery is no stranger to Michelin stars. Shane Osborn’s London restaurant Pied a Terre won him two. For this Hong Kong venture, Osborn has created a menu that revolves around modern European cuisine with a hint of an Asian twist. You can expect to find dishes like gnocchi with charred cevenne onion, cep vinaigrette and shiitake duxelle on the menu, for example. Something else that doths its cap to European restaurant culture is the wine list. It features 1,000-bins, including vintage burgundies and Krug 1996 Champagne.

Brat, London

Brat was awarded its Michelin star in October 2018. Food critic Jay Rayner described the cooking at this restaurant as ‘the culinary equivalent of an Anthony Hopkins performance’. What this translates as is ‘effortless’. The menu sidles show stoppers like oysters roasted with seaweed up against farmhouse table favourites like corn on then cob. Other dishes are simply listed as ‘mallard’ and ‘plaice’. Main plates start at the pocket money price of £8 and go up to somewhere around £60. Looks-wise, meanwhile, the décor is as understated as the menu. Think long boarding school-style tables and wood panelled walls.

Dubai's Ultimate Mansions

The term ‘mansion’ usually brings to mind an area like the Hamptons or an English country estate. However, over the last decade, Dubai has been growing in popularity as the destination of choice for a primary residence, especially among HNWIs. The city has accordingly developed an exceptional portfolio of mansions of its own, located within exclusive gated communities. Below are some of the finest mansion options from around Dubai.

Al Barari

Sitting in the Desert Leaf enclave of Al Barari, this majestic villa bears a regal facade with Arabesque design touches and sandy hues. The interiors have been extensively upgraded, with features like a triple-height foyer topped by a skylight, a gorgeous eat-in kitchen, an elegant wood-finished home office and an extended master suite that encompasses a bedroom, sitting room and terrace. The basement has one of the most comfortable private cinemas in Dubai, plus a stylish lounge with a bar and poker table featuring authentic chips from Monte Carlo. As if the interiors weren’t spectacular enough, outdoors you will find a 1,300 sq ft pool, a glass-walled gym, a spa, a yoga studio and a two-storey wooden structure that has a dining area on the lower level and an open-air majlis on top.

Dubai Hills Estate

Another incredible home with a contemporary exterior design, this mansion is located within the residential enclave of Hills view, in close proximity to the Dubai Hills Golf Course. The home is sold as a shell and core unit, which means that as a homeowner, you will have full license to design the interiors as you please. You could go for a design that matches the stunning exterior or a classical look that sits in contrast to it. Although the villa offers a total of seven bedrooms, the utility and layout of the rooms is at the homeowner’s discretion as well. Would you like to have a private study or library room in your mansion? This is the ideal opportunity to do so.

Palm Jumeirah

The man-made island of Palm Jumeirah is home to exquisite villas located along its fronds and frond tips. This home is part of the Signature Villas collection, with six bedrooms and fully upgraded interiors as well as an extended plot that takes you out to your own private beach. Floor-to-ceiling windows are present in every room, opening up the spaces to some of the most breathtaking views in the entire city. Key features include an ornate chandelier in the main atrium, a kitchen equipped with high-end appliances from Miele and Liebherr, an aquarium and a landscaped beach-facing garden with a magnificent infinity pool.

Emirates Hills

This seven-bedroom villa in the quiet Sector E of Emirates Hills is at the pinnacle of luxury living in Dubai, covering an area of 27,000 sq ft and spanning four levels. It is a home that is designed as much for wowing your guests as it is for living in. You have lounges and sitting rooms large enough to host small parties along with a dining room that looks like the private booth of a Michelin-starred restaurant. The rear terrace features a large infinity pool with temperature-controlled stone flooring and landscaping courtesy of award-winning designer Vladimir Djurovic, the highlights of which is a 3,000-year-old tree specially imported from Argentina.

District One

This mansion is part of a prestigious residential collection in the rapidly developing Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum City and is within the highly coveted Lagoon Cluster. It has a stunning contemporary design comprising floor-to-ceiling glass walls contrasted with angular lines and a high-contrast colour scheme. Offering a staggering 34,000 square feet of living space, this mansion provides the very ultimate in comfort. The interiors have the same dramatic contrasts in terms of colour as well as finish, with elegant and minimalistic design elements. It contains a total of eight bedrooms divided among two levels, along with a large ground floor living room, a basement with a private cinema and a beautifully landscaped pool deck.

Dubai's Premier Polo Community

October in Dubai is the time when one can see winter on the near horizon, with temperatures dropping steadily and outdoor activities becoming more prevalent. Thus it is also the start of polo season in the city, running through till May to really capitalize on the pleasant weather during this time. Perhaps the best way to enjoy watching a polo match is from your own backyard, especially if you live in one of the Polo Homes in the heart of Dubai. Located, quite appropriately, around the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club, this community is a bit of a hidden gem. Below, we have put together some of our very favorite villas in Polo Homes.

Villa 52

This beautiful six-bedroom home, which is listed exclusively with, offers 11,600 sq ft of living space and has been extended from its original size. Set on a plot of more than 22,000 sq ft, the villa has plenty of outdoor space to enjoy in addition to its stunning and high-quality interiors. The backyard is very ideal for entertaining and hosting a weekend get-together, with an outdoor pool, water features, gazebo and BBQ station as well as a lovely manicured lawn.

Villa 60

With an internal area of 13,500 sq ft, this villa is definitely one of the most spacious options available at Polo Homes. Most notable about it is the level of detail and thoughtfulness put into the interior layout and fit outs. Every element has been very carefully considered and the attention to detail is splendid, not just in terms of design but also functionality - as an example, two adjoining sets of doors that could potentially clash with each other on opening were converted to concertina doors. This villa also features a pool house that could be used as a gym or yoga studio, and a lovely backyard.

Villa 19

This villa stands out due to its high contrast interior colours scheme, exemplified by a checkerboard pattern in the foyer and main hallway. Throughout the home, various elements follow that same stunning contrast, from the staircase to the finishes in the bathrooms and kitchen. Situated on a corner plot, the villa offers plenty of outdoor space as well, which is ready be landscaped according to the new owner’s personal preferences.

Villa 30

This charming home enjoys a direct view of the practice polo field at the Polo Club. It features a lavishly designed interior that has bespoke features. The kitchen has been designed by Nobelia and wardrobes have been fitted by Perfect Proportions, just to give two examples. The backyard with its gorgeous pool and patio deck is a key feature of the villa, as are the terraces from which the view of the polo field can be enjoyed at their very best.

These represent a small cross-section of the fantastic offerings available at Polo Homes. To schedule viewings of the above or to learn about the other fine homes in the community, contact our Arabian Ranches specialist Ruth Harris. You may well be enjoying a polo match from your own gorgeous villa very soon.

Madinat Jumeirah Living Unveiled

As Cityscape draws to a close this year and we take a look at the new projects that were announced during the event, it seems that waterfront living was at the forefront. Meraas showcased the full vision for Port de La Mer, Meydan teased a new project known as Marsa Meydan and although it didn’t have any scale models or splashy displays, Emaar made sure that Emaar Beachfront wasn’t forgotten. One project that we were keen to learn more about, and that took centre stage on the event’s opening day, is Madinat Jumeirah Living by Dubai Holding.

Madinat Jumeirah Living is the first freehold residential project in the Umm Suqeim district, which is best known as the home of the Madinat Jumeirah resort and the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel. One of the most dynamic lifestyle attractions in Dubai, the Madinat Jumeirah resort is designed in the style of a traditional Arabian town. It is divided into three five-star hotels ( Jumeirah Al Qasr, Jumeirah Mina A’Salam and Jumeirah Al Naseem), a 1,000-seat amphitheatre, a multipurpose venue known as Madinat Arena, dining outlets, the famous Talise Spa, and Souk Madinat Jumeirah, a retail centre modeled after an Arabian marketplace.

Madinat Jumeirah Living will continue in that same vein, with a design that takes inspiration from traditional Arabian houses. The first phase of the project will comprise two residential buildings offering a selection of one to four-bedroom apartments and featuring a sand-coloured outer facade that has ornamental wooden flourishes, pergolas and wind catchers on the roof. The interiors will have a contrasting modern appearance with living areas that create a careful balance of space and light while overlooking panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and the Burj Al Arab’s magnificent sail-like silhouette.

Located in a prestigious neighbourhood, Madinat Jumeirah Living will be a gated community with vehicle access points at the entry gates leading down to a large subterranean parking garage. As a result, the walkway that winds its way around the buildings will be completely pedestrianized and ideal for a morning jog or a leisurely afternoon stroll. As you explore the walkway, you will also find an outdoor pool, an adjoining children’s pool, parks, play areas, and jogging and cycling trails. The development will also have its own community centre with retail and dining options. Rooftop BBQ areas will provide an open setting to entertain family and friends while enjoying unbroken panoramas of the surrounding district and the sea. Residents will be connected to Souk Madinat Jumeirah through an air conditioned bridge.

A short drive will take you to the private island on which the Burj Al Arab sits, as well as the nearby Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Thanks to a well-connected road network, other key areas of the city such as Palm Jumeirah, La Mer and Downtown Dubai will also be easily accessible.

Madinat Jumeirah Living is an exciting new addition to Dubai’s property landscape, not just because of the aesthetics and the fantastic location, but because it opens up a popular tourist destination in Dubai to a new wave of residents and a new era of luxury living.

This horseshoe-shaped duplex is ideally designed to create a sense of flow across levels and from indoors to outdoors, offering a haven of luxury living in one of the city’s most popular beachfront destinations.

The Alef Residences

Among its many exceptional amenities, the Alef provides exclusive access to Club 104, a resident-only club with a gym, spa, lounges and restaurants.

A gorgeous new icon in the coastal neighbourhood of Jumeirah Beach Residence, 1/JBR offers contemporary residential spaces with an aesthetic that is at once elegant and simplified. This duplex penthouse is one of a limited selection of penthouses located on the upper floors of the tower. High ceilings work harmoniously with full-height windows to open vibrant panoramas of the Arabian Sea and the magnificent Ain Dubai as well as part of Palm Jumeirah. Residents also enjoy the benefit of a private beach and direct access to Dubai Marina.

Introducing La Cote at Port de La Mer

La Mer, the beachfront hotspot that has captivated Dubai since it opened to the public last autumn, is on the verge of launching its next phase - the master community known as Port de La Mer. This will be the first freehold community in the heart of the Jumeirah district, one of the most popular coastal areas of the city. Coupled with that announcement is the launch of the first residential project within Port de La Mer, the charming neighbourhood of La Cote.

The seaside towns of the Mediterranean are the inspiration behind Port de La Mer, with their quaint historical buildings, bustling waterfronts and unhurried way of life. In a city like Dubai, never stopping to catch its breath as it continues to scale new heights, such a lifestyle would be a welcome change of pace. Tree-lined promenades surround the various communities within Port de La Mer, where you can spend an entire afternoon browsing boutique retail stores, enjoying a leisurely meal at one of the many restaurants or cafes dotting the area, or simply enjoying the beautiful view. A private beach stretches across the northernmost end of the community, creating a direct connection to the sea, and the very heart of Port de La Mer is a world-class marina with more than 190 berths and a yacht club.

La Cote comprises five low-rise buildings and sits in a very convenient location between the beach and the marina. It offers a selection of one to four-bedroom apartments and one very exclusive penthouse. The buildings offer a modern take on classic Mediterranean coastal homes, featuring terracotta roofing, pastel-hued exterior facades, exquisite stonework, floor-to-ceiling windows and wide balconies adorned with lush greenery. Interior and exterior spaces flow together seamlessly, combining elements of contemporary and traditional design. At La Cote, you can enjoy a quiet night in with the family or invite close friends over for an evening of entertainment while overlooking the Arabian Sea and the resort island of Pearl Jumeirah.

Port de La Mer is located on the Northern Peninsula of La Mer, one of four zones within the development. A main roadway connects the peninsula to the Jumeirah coastline, allowing direct access to the La Mer public beach and boardwalk as well as the adjoining Laguna waterpark. This also leads to the Southern Peninsula, which contains residential plots for purchase on La Mer. Jumeirah is well-connected to other major areas of Dubai, and a short drive will take you to the Downtown district, DIFC and Dubai Marina. Two of the city’s major airports - Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport - are also in easy reach.

Since its inception, La Mer has held the promise of being an exceptional destination that will reshape the concept of waterfront living in Dubai. That promise now comes closer than ever to being fulfilled with the launch of Port de La Mer.

La Cote is expected to be ready by December 2020.

5 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do in Dubai Marina

Dubai Marina is perhaps the most vibrant community in Dubai, with its picturesque skyline, beautiful boardwalk and thriving waterfront locations. It is also very well connected to the rest of the city via the main highway of Sheikh Zayed Road and other transport links, making it a must-visit for anyone living in the city. Everyone is familiar with the massive yacht marina from which the district derives its name, or the stunning beach at the neighbouring sub-community of JBR. However, there are a few activities you can indulge in that not many people are aware of. Here are 5 things that you perhaps did not know you could do at Dubai Marina.

Sunset at Pure Sky Lounge

At Pure Sky Lounge in Dubai, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Dubai sunset, all the way from the 35th floor of the Hilton Hotel in JBR. This bar has 2 terraces as well as an indoor dining room and sitting area. The menu includes a variety of drinks and tantalizing meals prepared by world-class chefs. The bar also holds a weekly happy hour and ladies’ nights for those who are interested. However, the main draw for most patrons is the beautiful view of the sunset. The terraces overlook the Arabian Gulf and provide a stunning panoramic view of the JBR beach, Palm Jumeirah, and the open sea. In fact, as you soak in the comforting surroundings of the lounge and the panoramas stretching out in front of you, you might get the sensation of time standing completely still. The Pure Sky Lounge offers a relaxed atmosphere and allows you to indulge in a great evening with friends.

Cruise on a Traditional Dhow

While the majority of the cruise trips along Dubai’s waterfront areas tend to be lengthy affairs after sunset that often involve dinner and a show, this great offering only takes up an hour and can be experienced at any time of the day. It’s also a great experience for visitors to the city, swapping out the sleek yachts they might be used to for a more traditional Arabian sailing vessel. Departing every hour from Dubai Marina, the extremely spacious dhow allows for voyagers to sprawl out on bean bags as it makes its way through the waterways of the marina, showing off the incredible architecture and scenery of the area before making its way to the outskirts of the Palm Jumeirah islands.

Camel Ride on JBR Beach

The JBR beachfront is renowned for its pristine shores, its boardwalk, the new outdoor cinema and the views of the upcoming Bluewaters Island. However, regular visitors may also have noticed vendors offering camel rides. To make the experience even more unique, the camels are covered with traditional garments and colorful tassels. While from the outside this may be nothing special, the camel ride is perhaps one of the most traditional activities that can be experienced in the city, and is a quick way to take in a slice of local culture. Perhaps riding a camel in the desert would be more authentic, but one can’t deny the charm of bobbing up and down on this majestic beast while enjoying the stunning beauty of the beach.

Dinner at Fume

Pier 7, located at the Dubai Marina, has established itself as one of the city’s most exclusive dining destinations, with full-floor restaurants covering each of its seven levels. Perhaps the most luxurious of these is Latin American eatery Fumé. The atmosphere at Fumé is always buzzing, and it creates a charming ambiance with wooden tables, low ceilings and a welcoming dining room. Enjoy a selection of traditional Latin dishes that have been given a contemporary spin, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding Marina skyline.

Dubai XLine

Technically this is a cheat, as most people know the Dubai XLine very well (and we’ve even covered it ourselves earlier this year). However, this is an experience worth mentioning again. The zipline, which starts at Amwaj Towers and ends on the terrace of the Dubai Marina Mall, really is unlike any other activity around the city. Equipped with ‘Superman’ harnesses, you will be belly down 170 meters above the ground, while you soar through the Dubai Marina on the world’s longest zipline. At XLine, you will enjoy unparalleled thrills and with the option to ride in tandem, you can take a friend or loved one along for the ride as well.

Introducing Marina Vista at Emaar Beachfront

Summer in Dubai may be have come to an end but the spirit of the season is being kept alive by a vibrant new launch at Emaar Beachfront. Marina Vista, the latest of the residential towers to be announced on this private island community, has been conceptualized as an ode to beach lovers.

With its clean white lines and blue tinted glass, Marina Vista is a reflection of the ocean waves and one of the most contemporary looking buildings on the island. Homebuyers can choose from a selection of one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments, each of which carries with it the same impeccable Miami-inspired style. The interiors have pristine white finishes with warm beige tones that evoke sandy beaches. Rising above the southern tip of Emaar Beachfront, Marina Vista is positioned so that each apartment enjoys a direct visual link to the sea, further heightened by floor-to-ceiling windows framing all of the exterior walls. The glittering skyline of Dubai Marina stretches out beyond the waters, creating the perfect backdrop for a relaxed evening in your living room or an intimate gathering with friends on your private terrace.

The residences of Marina Vista are complemented by an exceptional suite of amenities. Aside from a pool and fitness center, residents will find shops and restaurants along a retail plaza. The main attraction, and one where many a warm afternoon will likely be spent, is the beautiful private beach that surrounds the tower. All told, there is an expansive 1.5 km of private beachfront to enjoy, providing an all-encompassing view that wraps around to the gorgeous Palm Jumeirah on the other side of the island.

As the first residential tower to be located at the entryway to Emaar Beachfront, Marina Vista enjoys a very prime position. The district of Dubai Marina is located only a short drive (or yacht ride) away, and you could, in fact, take a leisurely stroll from one to the other courtesy of a bridge linking the two areas. A further drive will connect you with the main highway of Sheikh Zayed Road, thus allowing for a smooth ride into any other part of the city.

Life on the water has a very unique feel to it in Dubai. The city, which has a maritime heritage going back many decades, has built communities that are truly unique, from man-made marinas to the stunning Palm Jumeirah. Emaar Beachfront will be adding its own distinction to Dubai’s waterfront lifestyle as part of the 20 million sq ft Dubai Harbour project. In addition to 27 residential towers, luxury hotels and seaside leisure attractions, the island will be home to two cruise terminals, each of which has the capacity to hold 6,000 passengers at a time and is expected to have a flow of 1.2 million cruise travelers annually. Another key feature of the island is the Dubai Lighthouse, an observation tower standing 135 meters high and looking out over 360-degree views that capture the city’s skyline, its outlying islands and the mesmerizing Arabian Gulf.

Marina Vista is slated for completion in December 2021.
